AMATEUR PERFORMANCE IN DUNEDIN.

A PeffoemAmce of Dion Boucicault's comedy " London Assurance " was given last week at the Pnncrss Theatre, Dunedin, by the mem-b-.'rs of tbe I.oFCiufi Dramatic Society, Th« part of L*dy Gay Spanker waa filled by Miss Ada Mathesm, who, on i ho wt ole, p.ayed very creditably. She acted both with "pint aud intelligence — some thing more, however, of a rollicking tone thrown into the pnrt would have been an improvement. As Grace Harkaway, Mias A. D. Montgomery made a dtcided success : the rather strong-minded young lady, not, however, altogether above the weaknesses of her slx, was consistently pUyed throughout. As Pert, Miss Ilarkaway's maid, Miss K. Blauey p ajed brighily a^sd with a becoming archne-a. Mr K. R. Sincock as Sir llarcourt Courtly, also scored a success, ( he drjneiß and conceit of the not altogether unmauly old fop wure weil expressed. Mr J. Montgomery as thd tra..i loual country fquire — Squire Harkaway, gave good expression to the gentlemanly biuffness and genial humour of the character. Mr E. P. Willcocks as Charles Courtley Beemed quite in his (.lace both as Bcimp and lover, acquitting himself very creditably. Mr W. Fitzpitrick as The O'Dazzle sustained his taste of tbe brogue and hia touch of the blarney with all tbe impudence the part required. Mr R. HDaniels as Dolly Spanker played the amiable httle imbecile very cleverly. Messrs J, Swan, as Mark Meddle, and P. Cameron, as Cool, gave each an excellent account of himself. The minor characters Martin and Solomon Isaacs were duly represented by Messrs F. btaunton acd J. Mackay. The play waa well mounted, and the dressing aod general getup of tbe characters was, for amateurs especially, uncommonly good. A most enjoyable addition waa an excellent orchestn, under the directi )n of Mr Leo Giist.
