OBITUARY.

By the death of Mr A. J. White, which occurred on Friday the 7th ia&t, at his residence, Opawa, Christchurch has Joat a most estimable citizen and the Catholic congregation of that city a prominent and deservedly lespected member. Solemn office for the dead and Pontifical High Mass were celebrated at the pre-Catbedra], hiß Lordßhip the Bishop acting as celebrant, the Very Rev Father Cumminga, S. M., assßStant piiest ; tbe Very Eev Father Chervier, S.M. of Leeston, and Very Eev Father Foley, S.M., of l«iew Head'ord] deacons at the throne, the Rev Father Marnane, S.M,, and the Eev Father Malone, S.M., deacon and sub-deacon, respectively, of the Mass. Other members of the clergy present were the Rev Fathers Ginaty S.M,, and Salvador. The Bishop, who took hia text from the Ist Epistle to the Thcssalonians, chap, iv., " Brethren, we will not have you ignorant concerning them that sleep ; that ye ts not sorrowful, as others ere that have no hope," in the course of an eloquent sermon made touching alias'* on to the d joased. Dunn took place on Monday 'in the Catholic cemetery, Panmure. R, Dunn, an old and much esteemed friend of Monsignor McDonald. The funeral obsequies were performed by the Monsignor, who was assisted by Father Kehoe, of St Patrick's Cathedral, Auckland. The children attending Father Waltei'a school sang with a very pleasing effect some well-selected hymns, both in tbe church and a' the grave. and tbosi present were addressed in very feeling and very bomt ly terms by him.
