Mr Labouchere tells this good story :— Mr Gladstone met the members of the Gome* lie Frangaise at a garden party. On this the Premier procaeded to elaborate the theme under various heads, and delivered an essay to the lady on his colleague as a man, aa a philoso* phar, and as a Home Buler. Mdlle Beicheoberg chimed in with perpetual notes of approval. When, however, Mr Gladstone left her she anxiously inquired of a friend at what theatre Mr Morley per* formed, and whether he habitually played tragedj or comedy.
