ARCHBISHOPS LOGUE AND VAUGHAN CREATED CARDINALS.

At mid-day to-d?y a special Papal messenger conveyed to bis Grace the Most Rev Dr L'gue, at the Propaganda, the letter announcing bia nomination to the Cardinalate in secret Consistory. The Rev Dr Kelly, Rector of the Irish College, read the letter, and in a warm speech congratulated the new Cardinal. Archbishop Logue in responding, referred to his own personal unworthinesa of the high dignity conferred on him by his Holiness Leo XIII., but pointed out that as a direct successor of Bt Patrick he represented one of the oldest and most venerable Churches in Christendom—a Church which, in every stage of her glorious and chequered history, had proved by word and deed her constancy and unalterable loyalty to the Holy Bee in face of the bitterest persecution and contamely. As the recipient of this high honour, the newly-appointed Cardinal went on to say that he represented the Irish race throughout the world, wh eh w^uld, he felt confident, rejoice and thank the Sovereign Pontiff for this especial mark of favour towards a country and a ptople for whom Leo XIII had always shown the warmest solicitude both ia their temporal and spiritual interests. His Eminence, at the conclusion of the ceremony of presentation, was the object of numerous congratulations, and during the course of tbe bfttrnoon he was honoured by visits from the several ambassadors to the Holy See and many distinguished prelates. Ihe following telegram to Car inal Logue was also received :—: — "To bis Eminence Cardinal Logue, Inch College, Borne. " Priests and peop'e of your archdiocese tender you their warmest congratula'ions." (reuteb's telegbam.) The Pope held a Consistory this morning, at which fourteen Cardinals were created, six being Italian, two French, two Prussian, one English (Archbit-lnp Viughan), one Irish (archbishop Logue), one Hungarian, and one Spanish. Af .er the Consistory Cardinal Vaughan held a reception in the great hall of the English College, when the congratulations of the highest prelates of tbe Church, diplomatists accredited to the Vatican, the Roman nobility, leidiog members of the English colony, clergy of Rome, and leaiers of religious orders were presented to the new Prince of the Church. Meanwhile Cardinal Logue rece ved similar congratulatory visits in the saloon of the College of the Propaganda. The College of Cardinals, after to-morrow's creations, will consist of 34 Italians and 30 foreigners. The present numbers are 28 Italians and 22 foreigner.
