DUNEDIN CATHOLIC LITERARY SOCIETY.
The usual weekly meeting of the above Society was held in the Christian Brothers' School on Wednesday, May 26. Mr P. Hally (vice-president) occupied the chair. Messrs Geerin, Cantwell, and Heley took part in a dialogue from "Douglas," and Mr J. B. Callan recited "The Lotos Eaters," by Tennyson. These gentlemen were very favourably criticised by several of the members. Rreference was made to the kindness Mr Callan showed the Society at all times in atleoding the meetiogs and advising the members. Mr P. Carolin read a paper entitled " A Visit to Seacliff." The writer gave a description of the drive to that place and other instruction he derived from visiting the Asylum. The paper was criticised by several of the members, all of whom spoke of Mr Carolin's observation and originality of style. Mr Callan, in an amusing speech, told the members of his experiences in living in an Asylum, and some anecdotes of Innatice. Reference was made by Mr Callan to Tennyson. He advised the members to study that poet for purity of English, and he asserted there is not a line in the whole of Tennyson's works that would bring a blush to the face of anyone. Mr Yule was elected a member of the Society. The castomary vote of thanks to the chairman terminated the meeting.
