GENTLEMEN,— At the request of a number of friends, 1 beg to offer myself as a CANDIDATE for the Seat in Parliamert rendered vacant by the resignation of your late member, Mr J. W. Thomson, and to announce that I do 83 as a supporter of the present Government. I shall take the earliest opportunity of addressing you at the various centres of population throughout the Electorate, when I will place before you my views on the Political Questions of the Day. In my opinion the most important of these is that connected with the distribution and settlement of land. It is in this direction that we must look for a satisfactory solutijn of the difficuliies that have arisen wiih regard to the employment of the people. Here, as elsewhere, the social problem of the time is how to recoacile the two interests— Capital and Labour. The te-viency of modern industrial methods has been to draw population from the country into the towns. This, added to the increasing attractiveness— educational, social, and otherwise — of towu life, aui the absence of opportunity for easy access to land, has lid to the present posiion, and I think we Bhould endeavour to remedy the evil by offeung every inducement for widely diffused settlement. I believe that the Lind Question is in good hand*, and that, although Mr MKenzie m*y not obtaiu all ha asks for. still, if he continues to be supported by a good majority, there is every reason to believe thac immense benefits will result to the country if his vigorous policy be cairied into effect. As I purpose, durmg my canvass of the district, dealing at length with this and other matterfl connected with the Government policy, I here content myself wuh saying that I appeal to your suffrages, and rely upon receiving your support as a member of a party whose aims are directed towards such legislation as will promote the well-being, prosperity, and contentment of the people of this Colony.
