GALA NIGHT AT PANMURE.

(Auckland Herald, August 24.) On Friday night last a grand concert and ball eventuated at Panmure The function, which was a complimentary one to the Right Rev. Monsignore Walter McDonald, was a most pronounce! success in every respect, a fact which redounds to the ere ht of the chief promoters, Mr and Mrs J. Hogan. Long before seven o'clock people from Panmure and the surroundiDg districts — Otahuhu, Onehunga, Mangere, Howick, Maraetai, Flat Bush, and even Pa'pakura — began to congregate at St. Patrick's Hall, so that when the doors were opened at 7.15 p.m. a large concourse had assembled and speedily filled the greater portion of (he spacious building. The latter was, by the way, beautifully and lavishly decorated as only the Panmure folk can decorate, the stage, in particular, being resplendid in the magnficenci of foliage with which it was clothed. The whole of the decorations were carried oat under the supervision of Mrs John Hogan, and right well did sh'j deserve the encomiums of praise which were so plentifully showered upon her. Precisely at eight o'clock there arrived from Auckland a continent numbering 70, of Father Walter's old and faithful fnerds anil adherenlp. Their appearance in the hall was the signal for a spontaneous and prolonged outburst of applause from the cnuitry people, who wero cot slow to recognise and appreciate the reason which prompted the visitors. Father Walter, who was visibly affected at this fre»h and wholly unexpected evidence of his personal popularity, warmly welcomed the visitors, and then called upon Mrs Hogan to open the concert programme with a pianoforte solo, which was played by that lady with her usual and well-known artistic ability. The subjoined programme was then proceeded with, and was brought to a conclusion at a quarter-past eleven p.m. The honours of the evening were shared by, and very evenly divided between, Mr Montague, Miß3 Swan, Mrs and Mifs Eogan (duet), Miss Wilson, Mr Loomb and Captain Hulse, who one and all fully deserved Iho flattering plaudits with which their individual selections wire gnet-d. At the conclusion of the concert, Father Walter, in an eloquent and appropriate address, returned his sincere thanks to all who had contributed to the success of the entertainment, and made special and npp-eciating reference to the visitors from Auckland. The visitors from Auckland were loud in their praises of the splendid treatment they received at the hands of the management, and desire to specially thank Father Walter and Mr John Hogan for their uuvarying rourteay and assiduous attintion shown to thorn throughout the evening.
