The Danedin Catholic Literary Socisty held their ordinary weekly meeting last Wednesday, the chair being taken by the Bey. Father Lynch.

It being mentioned by the Bey. President that the St. Vincent de Paul Society intended holding a concert to replenish their fands, which are very low and entirely inadequate to carry them through the winter, owing to the many demands on their charity, the members decided to offer them every assistance in their power, the object being ■uch a deserving one and one so well worthy of support. Mr Simmonds recited a piece relating to tne loss of the Kakanui composed by a local gentleman— Mr Button, of the Garrison Hall ; when we cay that it was quite equal to Mr Simmon is' a<?ual style, it will be needless to make further comment. A rather amusing play or extravaganz i was read by Mr Haughton. as a suggestion to the members, should they wish to work op a play during the session. Mr P. Hally read a paper on Female Franchise. The paper was an excellently written one and excited much applause. The writer went on to say that it was a subject which had bsen exciting attention for a great number of years and had been coming more and more to the front until it was one of the burning political questions of the day, and he had not the slightest doubt but that it would become an accomplished fact, and that at no distant date. He took up the principal aigument9 against it and answered each one concisely and logically, The paper opening up such a wide field for debate, it was decided to adjourn the discussion cf it uaHl the next meeting. A Tote of thanks wa« accorded to Mr Sinamoads aad Mr Hally, on the motion of Messrs J. Eager and McKeay ; it wa9 supported alßo by Messrs Haughton, Carolin, Drumtn, Popplewell and Father Lynch. On a vote of thanks being given to the chair, the meeting closed.
