DUNEDIN CATHOLIC LITERARY SOCIETY.

The eighth annual meeting of the Dunedin Catholic Literary Society was held in the Christian Brother-.' schoolroom on Wednesday, April 8« The Ray. Father Lynch occupied tbe chair, and there was a very good attendance.

The report and balance-sheet were read, and on the motion of Messrs. Miller and Haughton were unanimously adopted.

The Society was shown lo be ia a very flourishing condition, due in a great measure to the rev. President, to whom, for his untiring exertions on its behalf the members are greatly endtbted. Tbe a erage attendance was higher than it has been for a number of years, and the term, which wan begun with a dtficit, ended with a substantial balance on hand. The session was terminated by a very successful entertainment given in St. Joseph's Hall, at which nearly 300 ladies and gentlemen were present.

On the retirement of the former office-bearers, the chairman referred in very complimentary terms to tbe many valuable services rendered by the late secretary, Mr. J. Hally, and said tbat the thanks of the Society were due to him for the manner in which he had worked during the term.

The following gentlemen were then elected for the ensuing year : —president, Bey. Father Lynch ; vice-presidents, Mesors. 0. B. Haughton, M.A., and J. Kager ; secretary and treasurer, Mr. Columb ; assistant secretary, Mr, J, Cantwell ; committee, Messrs. J. Hally, M* Miller, N. Griffin.

Mr. Eager, who spoke at some length on tha great loss sustained in the departure of Mr. B. A. Dunn*, who left Dunedin lately, moved the following motion :—": — " Tbat this meeting place on record its sincere regret at tbe loss to the Society of Air. Dunne, and its appreciation of his many valuable services to the Society, and while regretting his departure from Dunedin, trust that he will be more prosperous in his new sphere of usefulness.

The motion was seconded by Mr, Carolin, who dwelt on tbe great obligations the Sjciety was under to Mr. Dunce who bad always shown the greatest interest in it and who had proved himself without an e^ual as a worker since the commencement. Complimentary speeches were made by the president, Mr. J. P. Hayes, and Mr. Haughton, and on the suggestion of the latter it was decided to send a copy of the motion to Mr. Dunne. The motion on being put to the meeting was carried unanimously The Bey. Father Lynch very kindly presented twenty volumes to the library, and among other things said that in time he hoped to see it filled with good standard works. A vote of thanks to him for his generous gift, proposed by Mr. Carolin and seconded by Mr. Eager was carried unaoimousiy. Mr. C. E. Haughton spoke in terms of great praise of tbe books presented by Father Lynch and promised that he himself would also give'the S jciety several volumes, for which he was awarded a vote of i hanks. Ia order to keep the library select it was decided that no book be allowed in it without having first been passed by the committee. During the meeting there were ten gentlemen proposed for membership. The meeting closed with the customary vote of thanks to the chair.
