K"beM?,r.ol»° 88 N f- H 4 ™ SOS rel>Ort fOT tile «* «*■« Fat Cattle.— 2so head were yarded at Barnside for this day's Bale, a considerable portion of which were good to prime, several pens being very heavy weights. The balance were only medium comprißing a number of aged cowa. This number was somewhat in c?? sequlrementß|and5 equlrementB|and alth °°gh there was a good attendance of the trade, competition lacked spirit, prices ruling being fully JOa per head lower than last week. Best bullocks brought £8 10s to proportion " t0 £T 29 6d ; Ught> £ * to * 5 58 > CuWB iD Fat Sheep.— The entry to-day was considerably heavier, 3199 being penned, of which about 120 were merino wethers, all the rest crossbreds, about equal proportions wethers and ewea, three-fourths of the whole being shorn, (he balance in the wool. The trade be n E pretty bare of supplies the demand was fairly active ; exporters were also in the market, which helped to sustain values to some extent prices obtained being within Is to la 6d per head of those ruling last week. Best crossbred wethera in the woo! brought 18a 6d to 203 6d ■ 1B t? t0 16a 6d ; do d 0 Bborn - 13s 6li t0 15a 9d ; medium, 11s to 12a M . ; best crossbred ewea in the wool 16s 9d to 17s 9d ; medium to 15s; do do shorn, 13a to 14a 3d; medium, 10a to 12s; merino wethers in the wool, 11s ; shorn, 5s 9d. Lambs.- 617 were penned, representing all qualities. Considering the heavy supply forward, competition was fairly active. Best brought 9s to lla 9d ; others from 5s to 8a 6d. Pigs— 2Bs were penned, comprising all sorts, but only half a dozen baconers-mostly stores and suckers. The latter brought 4s 6d to 18s; stores, 13a 6d to 17s 6d ; porkers, 20a to 23s ; baconers 27s

*v t S re u?* ttle — These are not meeting with the active demand that might reasonably be expeced, considering the favour ble weather lately experienced. Wa le a few lots are occasional y beir.tr placed, grawera are exercising a considerable amount of caution In purchasing. The supply being generally in excess of requirement*, bnjerß buc seldom find much difficulty in seourine as many as they n^ed to replace those they may have ready for disposal. Three to fonr and five-year-old steers ia forward condition realise £3 10s to £5 108. Ljw conditioned and indifferently bred aorta are difficult to place at prices satisfactory to sellers. Store Sheep.— Business in this connection is again beginning to Bhow signs of activity: Several sales of some importance are being effected, and a moderate amount of inquiry is almost daily being made, more particularly for crossbreds. Merinos of all sorts are also receiving some attention, and no doubt farther on a very considerable •mount of business will eventuate.

Wool.— We are pleased to notice the sales now in progress at Home are assuming a Bomewhat more satisfactory tone. Pricea are firm and slightly hardening. Locally there is nothing of any importance doing in fleece wool. A few bags of piecea and locka are being weekly placed by auction, when most of the fellmongera are presea t and compete briskly for all offered, which realise very satisfactory prices, considering the tone of the market.

Hides.— We have no alteration to note in the position of the market. For inferior aud slippy, Id to l^d ; light, lid to lJd • medium, 2d to 2W ; good to best dry, salted, 2^d to 2Ji ; extra choice lots, 3d per lb. making the usual allowance in weight tor offal, ch^ka a*d shanks. '

Tallow and Fat.~A good demand for local consumption continaes to be experienced, but owing to the absence of suitable lots for export bein? in the maik.t there ia little or nothing doing in this direction. For inferior and mixed, 19s 6 1 to 15- 6d ; me Hum to good 16s to 18s; prime rendeied muttm, 19s to 20s. Kougb fat finds a ready sale, nn matter how small or large the panel, at— for best caul, from 13s to Ha ; inferior to medium and good, 10s to 12a 91 per cwr Sheepskins.— Doubtless owing to the uncertainty prevailing with respect to the future of the wool market, buyers on Tues lay (the regular weekly sale day, at the Chamber of Commerce Hall, Crawrord street) again opeiated with more caution. The attendance however waa very good, and competition fairly satisfactory. Butchers' green croasbreda and halfbreds, best in the wool, tetched 6s, 5s lid 5s lOd 5s 9d, 5s 7d, 5s sd, 5s 3d, 5s Id ; selected, 6s 6d, 6s 4J, 6a 3d • good to medium and inferior, ss, 4s lid, 4s 9d, 4s 7d, 4a sd, 4? 3d • green merinos, ss, 4a lOd, 4s 6d, 4a 3d, 4a ; green pelta, 9d, lOd, lldT Is ■ extra prime to la 4d ; lambskins, la Id, Is 2d, 1% 3d ; ful.'-woolled croasbreda, 4a 3d to 6s ; do do merino, 3s Ud to 5s 9d : dry pelts 3d to 7s 3d. J r '

Kabbitskins.— Cablegrams to hand reporting the position of the London market at the public sales which were held on Friday last the 6th inst are rather disappointing. On Monday small catalogues were offered to the usuat attendance of buyers, when pricea realised showed but little d.fferencc, Is to la 3d being obtained for spring ekms, otherß in proportion. Grain. -Wheat: For best Tuacan, 3* 9d to 3a 10d ; best white velvet, 3< B.t to 3s 10d ; medium to good. 3s 5d to 3s 7J • be t red straw, 3s 3d to 3s 4 1 ; medium, 3s Id to 3s 2 I ; inferior, 2a9 i to 3i (ex store). Oats :— rh. se have continued in very fair demand during the past week. Stocks are rapidly decreasing. Quotations for stous bngnt milling, Is 3frd to Is 4 \ ; beat abort feed, is 3*d to Is 4d ; medium, la 2£d to Is 31 ; black, Is Id to Is 31 ; Danish, L 2 1 to Is 2>d ; inferior and musty, Is to la Id (ex store, sacks extra). Barley : Holders of this cereal are now more dispos d to accept current rates ; in cone* quence considerable clearances have been made during the pact week or t wo, but owing to the moat of the etock held up to the present being only second rate, prices realised are correspondingly low, medium malting being disposed of at 2a 3d to 2b id ; feed aud milling, le 6d to la 9d (ex store).

Grass Seeds —The market is almost bare of both ryegrass »ad feed and cocksfoot, but at the moment the demand is not by any means extensive. The> small lota disposed of, however, realise about equal to late rates, while moderate-sized parceta would be difficult to place at late quotations, which may be given as follows :— For best machine-dreased ryegrass, 4s 9d to 5s ; farmers' best-dressed, 3a 6d to 4s ; medium, 2a 9d to 3a 3d (ex store) ; cocksfoot, 4d to 4|d per lb. I'otatoes.— O'd derwents, if good, are s ileable in small quantities at rrr m 30s to 40s per ton. New kidney also have a moderate demand, but the consumption is limited. Quotations for both local grown and imported, £9 to £10 per ton. Chaff has only a moderate demand, and no improvement in price. Best is worth 37s 6d to 42s 6d ; medium, 30s to 35a per toD. Dury Produce.— The market is pretty well cleared out of factory made old cheeee, but the new is now coming forward, and selling in small parcels at 4jd to 4£d for medium size. Butter shows no improvement in demand, which is only for local requirements at for prime, salted, in Pond's boxes, 7d to 8J ; in other packages, 6d to 7d per lb. °

Flax— There is a fair demand for thoroughly scutched bright nbre. Inferior and medium is also saleable, but at prices less favourable when compared with those obtataining for Buperior quality. We quote superior soft bright, £19 103 to £20 5a ; medium to good, well-dressed, £16 10a to £18 59;5 9 ; common, coarse, and strawy , £10 to £15 per ton.

Messrs. Donald Reid and Co., Dunedin, report for the week ending December 17, aa followa :—

Only a mall supply was catalogued for our usual weekly auction sale of grain and produce held at our stores on Monday last. There waaa large attendance|of buyers and others interested, and bidding was moderately briik.

Grain: Wheat.— There has been unusually little inquiry duripg the week. We quote-Milling, 3s 2d to 3a 7d ; fowl wheat, 2i to os Id.

Oats. — Deliveres ar9 now exceedingly limited, and the quantity arriving is not sufficient to supply the present demand, there being a want of gn 0 i heavy brisrtn oats suitable f>r shipment Home. There is busk demand for all qua'itiee, and in face of the very limited deliveries prices are rath r fhmer. We quote— milling, Is 3id to Is 4£d ; feed, Is Id to Is 3d, sacks extra. Barley.— A few lines hive bten cleared at for— malting, 2s Id to 2a 4d ; milling, Is lOd to 2a ; feed, Is 6d to Is 9ci, sacks extra. Cnaff.— We quote-Prime, £2 to £2 ss; medium, £l 10s to ±.1 15s.
