WAITAHUNA.

("From an occasional Correspondent.)

November 11, 1890 A striking exemplification of the consistency of a people occurred here on the evening of the 3rd November, when Mr. Thomson addressed the electors. His speech was certainly an eloqaent one, and be had no reason to complain of his reception, but when his views, distinctly enough stated, on theeducation question were given, tbe interest in the proceedings, one would naturally think ceaßed for a people who had suffered so long and patiently under the present system. He (Mr. Thomson) was distinctly averse to giving State aid to Catbohc schools, though he graciously added he would not be against the Douay Bible being read in schools, should circumstances be otherwise favourable. With his views on the different phases of religion with which be favoured his audience we have so little to do as to render it needless to quote them — it was all suffL-ient to know that from Mr. Thomson we could expwer nothing but opposition. Mr. Valentine, the candidate for Lawrence, has stated in answer to a question, that he is, and ha I ever beeu, a consistent supporter of Pyke's Bill for giving State aid to denominational schools. His views on other questions of the day seem al io to meet with geneial approval. An election of minor importance, the Tuapeka County Council, takes place to-morrow. Messrs Cowan ana Livingstone, both of Waitahuaa, contesting Clark's riJing. Mr. Oudaille having a walk-over for Waitahuna. Tbe wearher is just about as wet, cold, and unseasonable as it can possibly be ; rain, hail, cold, high winds, aud shaip frostß prevailing.
