College athletics have never had a better excuse for being than in the exploit of the Evatistoo, 111., life-saving crew in rescuing twenty-nine men and a woman from two wrecked vessels on the night of October 22. The crew is composed of students of the Northwestern University. In spue of high s;as aad a dense fog, the brave boys made three trips aud brought, off all hands in safety. This is better work than winning races ; but it is the winning of races that makes the heroes fit for the better work. — Pilot.
A committee is being formed for the purpo3e of considering plans for the construction of a ship canal to coanect Berlin with the Baltic Sei. li is purposed to cut a canal from Berlin to the nearest point on the river Oder, and thence to utilise the river itself by dredging and otherwise improving, as a ship canal, as far as the Baltic Sea.
