HOME RULE VICTORIES IN THE TORY STRONGHOLD.

TO THE EDITOR N.Z. TABLET

Sib, — It may be interesting; to your reaiers to know that the two byeelections which took place iq London a few days ago, and of which meniion is made in your last week's is^ue. were a great victory fjr the Home Rule pirty.

The Brixton seat, vacated by tbe death of the Marauis of Caermarthen, was won by Mr. Morgan, the Home Rule candidate, by tbe sweeping majority of 1719 over Mr. Drummond, the nominee of the Tories.

At tbe last election for tbe same seat, July 19, 1887, the Marquis of Caermarthen defeated Jdr. James Hill, the Gladstonian Liberal, by the substantial majority of 738. So that within" a period' of two years the Tory majority of 738 has been transformed into a Home Bule majority of 1719. The Marylebone seat, although won by the Tories, is nevertheless a Bplendid victory for the Home Rulers. At the last election, Lord Charles Beresfora defeated Mr. Beesly, tbe Gladstonian, by a majority of 1486. The figures then were, Beresford, 3101 ; Beesly, 1616. At the recent election for the same seat the fignres were, Bulnois (Conservative), 2579 ; Leveeon-Gower (Home Ruler), 2086. Majority for the Tory, 493. It, will be seen by the above that the Tory majority has been reduced by 1000 votes since the last election. The result of these victories is very encouraging, especially coming so cloße after the grand victory gained at Kennington (another London seat won by the Home Rulers), and other place 3. It must also be remembered that London is the principal stronghold of the Coercionists, for at the last general election only ten Home Rulers were returned out of a total of nearly sixty members. Therefore, taking everything into consideration, the tide is evidently flowing with the Liberal party, and it will be only a few years at most when coercion willbedead, and, I hope, never again to rise " to shame the world again." Apologising for trespassing so much on your valuable ppace. — I am, etc., Timaiu, July 30, 1889. John O'Roueke.
