'• May it please your Eminence, — "We. tbe pupils of the Uarist Brothers' School, Wellington, N.Z., feel exceedingly glad at being able to offjr your Eminence our little tribute of thanks for the honor you confer on us to-day by coming into our midst. " Who would have dreamt ten years ago that v prince of the Church would visit New Zealand in 188 C 1 and that this school, then building, would so soon be honoured by the visit of an Australian Cardinal ? Yet, what nobody would have dared to hope has actually come to pass. " By your Eminence's appointment to the Antipodes the vitality and universality of our grand old Church have been manifested to all nations. How foolish are those that seek to find in her signs of decay 1 She was, yesterday ; is, to-day ; and shall be, to the end of time. "Now, more than ever, will her Captain be empowered to steer unerringly the barque of Peter ; for has he not Cardinals at every point looking for guidance to the Botnan Polar Star / And should murky clouds arise to obscure all light, and violent storms threaten to drive the vessel from its course, has he not the compass of infivilibUity 1 F " How glad we are to assure your Eminence that, despite our tender years, we have learnt to feel pride at belonging to the Church that has civilised the world ; and on tbis solemn occasion we desire to promise you we will always strive our best to be faithful and practical members of it. " While renewing our most cordial thanks to your Eminence for having deigned to remember the little ones of this school, we prostrate ourselves at your feet to beg your Apostolic benediction. ••We have the honour to remain, my Lord Cardinal, your most numble and obedient children, "Thb Pupils or the Mabist Rbothebs" School "Feb. 20, 1886."
