SACRED HEART SELECT SCHOOL, WANGANUI.

(Wanganni Herald December 18, 1885.)

A vert pleasant entertainment was given by the pupils of the Convent of the Sacred Heart School in St. Mary's School Room last evening, when the following attractive programme was gone through most successfully. '• Papillous," by Misses Heslop, Handley, Wixcey, Goodson and McMinn, In the instrumental portion three pianos were in use, and in two of the pieces the harmonium was also in use. The pianoforte playing was very good, the touch being in general firm and clear and the time correctly taken. Mrs. Lloyd's singing lessons to the pupils hid evidently been given to apt scholars, whilst the pianoforte tuition of the Sisters, with their assistant, Miss Lennon, had borne excellent fruit, judging by the pieces given throughout the evening. The entertainment wound up with a ])ctite comedie "My Aunt's Heiress" the charactersof which were repiesentedby the Misses Handley (2),Goodson(2), McMina, Fantham, Burke, McKay, Heslop, Wixcey, and Mahoney. Duringthe evening Miss Wixcey acted as stage manager.and announced the different items on the programme with clearness and confidence. The distribution of prizes, as above given, was then conducted, and at its conclusion, the audience dispersed well pleased with the entertainment. The fancy and plain work displayed ia the Convent School during the afternoon, evidenced the careful tuition and industrious scholars. The wax fruit and flowers were exceptionally good, whilst the paintings and drawings were also very creditable. In the fancy work some very creditable work was displayed. Miss Heslop's arrasene work being specially commendable. We have no space to notice further the many other articles of ornamental and useful work shown by the pupils, but we must not conclude this notice without commending the specimens of wri ing on view, many of them being exceptionally good, and all of more than average merit, betokening a larrge amount of practice under capable direction. The pupils, many of whom are boarders at the Convent, all seemed thoroughly happy and to enjoy themselves without restraint, bright healthy facesf and smiles being the only ones seen among the pupils.
