His Loidship the Bishop of Dunedin will hold a visitation at Ophir on Sunday next. During the en&uing week the bishop will examine the Catholic Echools at Naseby, St. Bathau's, and other parts of tie district.

Owing to the inclemency of the weather last Sunday, Feast of the Most Holy Rosary, the usual procession at the Dominican ConveDt, Dunedm, could not take pl.ice. Devotions, however, wtre held in St. Joseph's school-ioom, where there was a large attendance. Hie Loidship the Bishop afterwards enrolled several members in the confraternity of the Dominican Rosary, and invested many with the various scapulars.

The Otago Volunteers were reviewed on Wednesday by trir George Wnitmore. The men presented a very creditable appearance,

and went through their various evolutions in good style. The number present was 986 out of a total of 1117. Sir George Whitmore very reasonably condemned the want of patriotism shown by those employers who prevented their men from attending the review and to which he attributed the absence of those who were missing. He professed himself very well satisfied with the result of his inspection.

We fear that the attempt now being made to put down the social evil by exposing all its details in an extreme manner is hardly likely toresultin much good. We fully approve of all measures, even the most severe, and amounting to capital punishment if necessary taken to defend young girls against ensnarermnt or force. But vice in its ordinary course is much more likely to be promoted than repressed by publicity, and such steps as may strip it of even the cloak of shame that still separates it from the contact of many people and protects them against it. Nothing more foolish for example was ever published than that communication lately addressed to an Auckland paper by an indignant lady, the wife of a learned professor, and the result of whose advej must be to make the monster brazen beyond all hopes of repr< ssion.

A reception of members and aspirants to the sodality of the Sacred Heart tookjplace in St. Joseph's Church Dunodin on Friday e vening. It has been arranged that the general communion of the women's branch shall be made on the second Sunday of every month their meeting being held on the second Friday.
