THE CATHOLIC HIERARCHY AND MR. PARNELL.

(To the Editor of the Tablet.) SIB,— In reference to the statement alleged by the St. Jams* Gazette to ta current "in Boman Catholic oircles," I beg to say that, so far as lam concerned, the statement is untrue. The English Bishops have had no proposal submitted to them by me. and, therefore have not condemned any such proposal. Nor has any proposal 1 on the subject reached me from the Eishop of Salford. The Irish Parliamentary party are nearly all Catholics. 1 believe them to b» sincere Catholics, and no friends to M. Henri Bochefort. Asked or unpsked, I have no doubt they will use their be3t exertions in Parliament to save our Catholic education in Englaad from the gradual extinction which threatens it.— l am sir, yours faithfully, a . „ . , „ t Edwaed Bis'oop of Nottingham. St. Barnabas' Cathedral, Nottingham, 19jh March, 1885. The following is the paragraph referred to : "It is positively statsd in Boman Catholic circles that Dr Vanghan, Eishop of Salford, and Dr. Bagshawe, Bishop of N6ltingham, whose Land League sympathies are well known, recently proposed'^ their brother prelates-to follow the example -ortftT Irish hierarchy" and formally entrust the cause, of 'Catholic education i!r/-Eri<»land ! the so-called Irish Parliamentary party. The ecclesiastical authorities' to whom the project was submitted were, it is said, unanimous in their condemnation of anj scheme for admitting M;ftenri BocnefortV fnends to their councils on this matter. The proposers, howevef, • were not to be rebuffed ; and one of them -has,- it -is allege*, endeavoured, ever since his colleagues have expressed their dissent from lua views, to open communications with Archbishop Croke's confidant, through the medium of Mr. Arthur Moore, the - Home BuleTmember for Clonmel." . „ , „, ,< _„ „,,(,,,
