ST. ALOYSIUS' COLLEGE, WAIKARI.

The annual distribution of prizes took place at the College of the Jesuit Fathers, near Dunedin, "on Friday, His Lordship the Bishop n'M a l ?i? R 6 T S ioD ii n ,^ presence of the Rev. Fathers 0 Mai ey, S.J., M-Bnroe, S. J., Walsh, and Lynch, and several friends and relatives of the pupils. The programme opened with the performance of « Cola Cola," a pretty vocal and instrumental chorus, which was gone through with in a manner that spoke highly fc the improvement made in their musical studies by the students during the year. The other musical selections were the " Prince Imperial Galop " played with spirit on the piano byW. Haydon ; the chorus " Bendinella pellegnna "; " Gavotte de Louis XIII," a very pretty duet for the violin and piano, by J. M'llroy and P. Ward ; « Santa Lucia," a chorus i ; "Eileen Allanah," a song with violin and piano accompaniment, by L. Redwood, J. M'llioy, and C. M'Guinness,— L. Redwood who possesses a most pleasing voice, taking the vocalist's part with remarkably good effect ; "Signal March," a stirring duet for piano and violin, by J. M'llroy and I\ Redwood ; and « The Gondolier," a chorus. B. baunders underwent a searching examination in th« Latm expressions commonly used in English ; D. Roche gave a fluent rendering of a passage from Caesar, book VII. ; and W Havdon from Charles XU., book VIII. ; P. Ward and J. Ahem distinguished themselves by working out difficult problems in algebra and arithmetic ; W. H aydon went through with a series of answers in geography and history ; G. Haydou proved himself an adept in sacred geography, and L. Redwood gave some very interestine facts connected with natural philosophy. These exercises, which were admirably carried out in every instance, show beyond all doubt and in a very instructive manner, the progress of the classes in useful subjects, and how thoroughly well the boys are taught. The selections m elocution were—" Lord Brougham on the Slave Trade," very well given by J. Macdonald ; Napoleon's Manifesto to his Soldieis before the Battle of Jena," bravely spoken by G. Haydon ; Hubert and Prince Arthur," by Ph. Redwood, W. Haydon, D. Roche, and R. Coneys; " iEsop, ' by P. Ward and J. M'llroy ; and a scene, in the original French, from "Mohere's Les Fourberies de Scapin." in which tLeactors —Ph. Redmond (Scapin), L. Bedwood (Leandre), J. M'llroy (Octave) • Ma( ?d onald (Carle),— entered very fully into the fun of the dramatist. Ihe programme as a whole was exceedingly well chosen and admirably carried through. On its conclusion the Bishop distributed the prizes, and afterwards addressed the pupils to the following effect : — s / His Lordihip said he was happy to congratulate them on the result of their examination, They had made very great progress and, judging by the exhibition given, their improvement had been even greater than in any previous year. This, however, was to be expected, as the examination had been the result of a longer training —of longer and more careful study— than in any previous term If therefore, it was his duty to congratulate them, they were not to tnmk there was anything extraordinary in this—it was only what was to be expected ; but at the same time it was satisfactory to find that the expectations had been realised. He had great pleasure, then, in congratulating them on the progress they had made. He ought also to say a wo id m reference to their teachers who had charge of them' and whose care and indefatigable labonr had contributed so much to tneir success. They could not now, perhaps, fully understand how much they were indebted to their teachers. If, however, they had the same experience as he (the most reverend speaker) had, they would be able to eet a proper value on the care that bad been

bestowed upon them. For himself, he must say his gratitude to their teachers was well nigh unbounded. Even if he had had no otber means of judging, what he had now witnessed would prove to mm the great care and labour that must bare been taken by them, the pupils could not be too grateful to them. His Lordship concluded by dismissing the boys for the vacation, at the same time expressing a wish that they might enjoy the holidays they had so well earned.
