HIBERNIAN SOCIETY'S TENTH ANNUAL FETE.

The tenth annual fete under the auspice 3of the Hibernian Society will be held at the Caledonian Society's grounds, Kensington, Dunedin, on St. Stephen's Day, 26th inst. A glance at the programme will show that several valuable prizes are offered for competition, including a substantial money prize, and gold medal, valued at ten guineas, for wrestling (collar and elbow style), a money prize of eight pounds for wrestling (Cumberland style), a money prize of six pounds for the Hibernian Handicap, and several other good money prizes for running, walking, etc. The events are open to all comers and' are sure to bring together a very large number of competitors, considering the increasing popularity of these sports which are now second in importance to the great Caledonian gathering at the New Year. The gentlemen forming the working committee are to be congratulated and deserve the best thanks of all lovers of athletic games for their persistent efforts in the face of many difficulties to provide so excellent a day's recreation, to which we look forward with pleasure each succeeding year at the approach of the joyous season of Christmas. It may not be generally known that these gentlemen devote a great deal of time to preparing the programme, and arranging matters generally, and also incur considerable pecuniary risk, because the Hibernian Society being a registered Friendly Society, the funds must remain intact, therefore any loss arising from these "sports must be provided for altogether apart from the funds of the Society. We believe we are correct instating that a considerable loss was sustained last year owing to the inclemency of the weather. We hope to see, then, a very large attendance on the day in question, as we can safely predict a pleasant day's enjoyment for all who will visit the Caledonian grounds, amongst whom we hope to see many visitors frem the country, as the following well-known wrestlers will compete : -GK Robertson, J. Tyfeon, J. Tiffen, W. Hudson, C. Le Strange, W. Thornton, T. Carter, R. Healy. In addition to the other attractions the Naval Brigade Band will be in attendance under the ,'able conductorship of Mr. C. Combep, and play a choice selection of National and popular music.
