DOMINICAN CONVENT, DUNEDIN.

The annual distribution of prizes at the Convent High School took place on Tuesday. Owing to the time spent by the pupils in preparing for the juvenile entertainments given in the course of the year in aid of the Cathedral Building Fund, lt was not thought judicious that they should be called upon to practise for a concert, such as had hitherto been given at the annual breaking up of the school, and which would, under the circumstances have interfered with more useful studies. The presentation of prize 3 was made by the Bishop in the presence of the Yen. Archdeacon Coleman, and the Eev. Father Fathers Walsh, Burke, and Lynch : and when the duty had been performed, His Lordship made a brief address to the pupils. He said he wished them the enjoyment of happy holidays, and hoped they would amuse themselves well and innocently. That part of the examination which he himself had conducted or "witnessed had been very satisfactory. The study of English was certainly the __ most important of all, but in a school like theirs it was not enough ; " more was expected from the pupils, and while they should not neglect their English studies they must give due attention to other branches as well. He had been sorry to learn from, the Rev. Mother Prioress that their answering in French had mot been so good as it ought to have been. A knowledge of the French language was of great utility— and sometimes even of necessity — and in all cases the study of a foreign language was of much assistance in acquiring a perfect knowledge of your own. He hoped, then, to find that next year there had been an improvement made in this respect, and whether it was French, German, or Italian that they _ would devote themselves earnestly to its study. As to their conduct he could say nothing concerning it except what was in its praise. It had been very satisfactory, and it gave him great pleasure to distribute the prizes to them. He would not, however, say that he thought they could not have made more progress had they desired. He thought there was a certain lack of industry on the part of some, and although at their age it might be difficult for them to devote themselves seriously to their studies, they must know that it was only by hard work they could acquire a good education. He hopnr 1 . then^that next year they would make a firm resolution of doi- <x their utmost to profit by the time and opportunity of study they v >.v possessed. His Lordship then dismissed the schools until Jan. 28. A quantity of needlework of every variety, executed by the pupils with great taste and skill, was laid out for exhibition in one of the class-rooms, and deservedly gained much admiration. Miss Watson showed a bracket in chenille work, a handsome cushion with a stork done in silk, and several articles in raised bead work ; Miss Dennehy had a very pretty anti-macassar in etching ; Miss Heggarty

a vase of paper flowers, charmingly designed ; Mißs Clara Cameron, raised bead work; Miss Mille, a card basket in raised bead work, and Jloniton point lace and guipure antimacaßßar ; Miss McLachlan, a chenille bracket ; Miss Ahem, a cushion in raised bead work ; Miss K.
