Italian unity has had to wait for such an intellectual nullity for its realisation. * Garibaldi's • xpedition with the « Thousand ' was a ridiculous comedy that had to be played before Europe to exonerate the Piedinontese Government. Garibaldi himself lost all courage at the Voltarno, and was found by Nino Bixio concealed in a trench, and roused with oggi bistgna di morir odi vincere. The arrival of the Piedmontese beraaglieri saved him and won the battle."
