The first five American cities in order of population are New York, with a population of 1,206,299 ; Philadelphia, 847,170 ; Brooklyn, 566,663 ; Chicago, 503,185 ; and Boston, 362,839. There are •omewhat over 21,000 more women than men in New York city, and 249,000 more natives than foreigners. The proportion of natives to foreigners in Philadelphia is much greater than in New York, or, roughly, three to one against three to two in New York. In Brooklyn the native proportion is somewhat more than double the foreign.

A correspondent of the Bombay Catholic Examiner writes from Kirkee :— There is nothing like a good preparation for death. Last Monday the remains of Joseph Michael Cahill were consigned to their last resting-place in the new cemetery at Kirkee He was for several years a pupil at St. Mary's institution at Bombay, and then joined the Medical Department. Last year he was ordered to the front to do duty as Assistant Apothecary with the troops at Khandahar, and finally at Quetta, where he contracted the insidious disease that carried him to his grave. Being aware how fatal phthisis pulmonalia is, he made good use of the time left to him and only thought of preparing for a good death. More than once be received the Holy Sacrament* with great devotion ; religious books were always in his hand* ; he never complained of his sufferings, though they were very great. On St. Patrick's Day he made his last communion, on which occasion he was almost in a trance of joy and happiness. He imagined he saw his Patron St. Joseph near his bed calling him to go to heaven. And it proved to be so, for on St. Joseph's day he expired quietly, with the names of Jesus and Mary on. his lips. Were there no other good fruit to be had from beiig in our Catholic schools but this, that the young minds are imbued then with the principles of faith and morality which mij seem sometimes to be forgotten for some years, when a young mantis tossed about on the ocean of the world, but which are revived again at the approach of eternity, parents should appreciate our institutions above all other worldly advantages. They should make every sacrifice to have their •ffspring sent to a good Catholic school. RJJ*.
