CONCERT AT PORT CHALMERS.

The concert in aid of the Presbytery at Port Chalmers, held on last Wednesday evening, was in every way aa unqualified success. The building was crowded, and the audience were very enthusiastic throughout the rather long programme. His Lordship the Bishop under whose patronage the concert was given, attended during the evening, but had to leave in order to reach Dunedin by the 9 45 p.m. train. The opening glee, " Hark the Lark," was very wall rendered by the entire company. Mrs. Angus contributed " True to the Last" with great expression, and to a well-merited encore gave " The Dear Little Shamrock" with much sweetness. The same lady also took part with Miss Carroll in the duet " List to the Convent Bells, which went very prettily, and in the duet '< Of Fairy Wand " from " Maritana," with Mr. A. Corrigan. The latter might fairly be termed the gem of the evening, Mrs. Angus' voice beiag heard to great advantage, aod the richness of its tones with splendid effect. In response to the rapturous applause which ensued the latter part of it was repeated. Miss Hill rendered the ballad " Kathleen Mavourneen,' which was very well received. The Misses Wigaall gave the duet, " I would that my Love," in the first part, and Miss M. Wignall, ' EUleen Alannah," in the second part, her sister contributing a ve*y pleasing Scotch ballad, " I Canna' please Twa," both of which were encored. Misses Hall and Carroll sang the " Wind and the Harp" very tastefully, the former lady also sang as a solo " The Murmur of the Shell" very sweetly, and as an encore "In the Gloaming." Mr. D. A. De Maus contributed several comic songs during the evening, all of which were thoroughly enjoyed by the audience, who were convulsed with laughter every moment that this gentleman appeared on the stage. Mr. M'Kinnon, who is, we are informed, blind, gave the " Monastery Bells "as a piano solo. The playing of this gentleman is indeed marvellous, when we consider that he plays solely by touch. Mr. A. Haase. who was suffering from a severe cold, gave " Nancy Lee." " Happy be thy Dreams," by Mr. N. Smith, and " Stranded," by Mr A. Corrigan, were very well rendered, the latter gentleman's bass voice being well suited to this difficult composition. The glee, '• The Carnovale," which was given with much spirit by the company, and " God Save the Queen " brought a very enjoyable evening to a close. Mr. F. Bayley rendered very valuable assistance as accompanist, and the same gentleman also gave a piano solo in a masterly style, while Mr A. Corrigan ably officiated as director. At the conclusion of the concert the Rev. W. J. Newport took the opportunity of returning his very sincere thanks to the numerous ladies and gentlemen who had assisted during the evening, the larger number of them having come from Dunedin. The rev. gentleman and Mr N. Smith must be congratulated for the manner in which all the arrangements were carried through, and their efforts, combined with all who rendered assistance, havg succeeded in forming a very handsome neuclus for the Presbytery fund.
