Occasional Notes.

Pebsoks desirous of contributing towards the relief of the orphans in Gal way are requested at once to forward their subscriptions to Mr. E. O'Connor, Christchurch, as it is intended to close the list so as to admit of the balance of the amount collected being sent Home by the outgoing mail on the 2Sth inst. All those who have promised subscriptions are particularly requested to attend to this notice. We have received from Mr. E. Clifford of Waipori a cheque for £12 11s 6d being the amount collected by him in aid of the Irish poor, and which he desires us to forward to His Grace the Archbishop of Tuam, for distribution. The names of the subscribers will be found in another column. One of the most spirited collections in aid of the distress in Ireland which we have noticed is that made at Waimate where £300 have been subscribed, a very large sum when the circumstances of the town in question are considered. The Dominican Sisters desire us to acknowledge on their part a remittance towards their Art-Union from Mr. Charles Canning, Auckland. The Irish Famine Etlief Committee, Dunedin, have decided, in deference to the Avishes of country subscribers, to keep their lists open until March sth. On Wednesday last the total amount subscribed was £1286 13s Od. We desire to remind our readers that Mr. Arthur Sketchley. the celebrated lecturer and humorist, is about to visit Dunedin. His first lecture in this city will be delivered at the Oddfellows' Hall, Rattray street, on Monday evening next. We advise all who desire to form the acquaintance of Mrs, Brown on the occasion, to secure their seats in good time, as the popularity of the world-renowned lady is sure to draw a crowded house.
