BERNADETTE SOUBIROUS.

Writing of the death of Bernadette, Mr. Henry Lasserre, the last of the three who will be forever associated with Our Lady of Lourdee, says very affectingly : " God forbid we should anticipate the judgments of the Church, but we cannot forget that the Immaculate Virgin said formally to the child of her choice : ' I promise to make you happy, not here, but hereafter.' And the promise of Mary is a foundation more solid than the adamantine rock. In this world Bernadette suffered ; in the other she is happy. Here upon earth she met witlTopposition and persecution. Everywhere and always she stood firm and immovable against the adversaries of truth, some of whom were known to man, others of whom men did not know. But over all she has triumphed, with no other arms than her own innocence and her invincible confidence in the testimony with which our heavenly Mother had charged her. Bernadette and that admirable priest, Mgr. Peyramale — like her, the chosen one of Mary— shall live forever in the memory of man. For the child and the old man were engaged in the same work, and served as instruments in the hands of God to produce in our age a religious movement with which the crusades alone can be compared. They defended the same truth. They suffered the same punishments. Every enemy of Mgr. Peyramale was necessarily also the detractor of Bernadette. May the Cur 6 Peyramale and Sister Mary Bernard rest in the peace of the just, and remember those who are yet contending for the same cause, and seeking to be inspired by the sentiments of their hearts."
