Messrs A. and H. Mebceb report for the week ending April 22rd :— Since our last weekly report butter has advanced Id per lb and there is a great falling off in the quantity coming in and the market is still well supplied. Fresh butter in £lb and lib prints best and favourite brands, Is 6d per lb ; ordinary butter, Is 4d to Is 5d per lb ; powdered and salt butter, Is 3d to Is 4d per lb. There is no demand for salt butter at present, price Is per lb. Cheese, best quality, lOd to lid per lb ; side and rolled bacon, lOd to lid per lb • Colonial hams, Is per lb. Eggs are still scarce, and retailing at 3s per dozen this week. The Royal Hotel, Oaniaru, is conducted by Mr. J. D. Kett. Tho establishment is maintained in superior style, and boarders or visitors to the the town in question, will find it a most desirable ulace of residence. r One of New Hampshire's oldest inhabitants died at the ago of 115 years. It is related of him that, wanting a smart wife he gave notice to two women that if they would coiue out and fight, he would marry the winner. They complied, and he kept his word. How he got along with the athletic winner is not known. The Sisters of Charity in Gnesen managed a Refuge for little destitute children. They have now received a notice from Government that they must quit the establishment by April 1. The place is to be banded over to a lay Directorate. Twenty-two hundred Catholic ladies of the Rhine provinces have forwarded a petition to Emperor William of Germany against the suppression of the Ursuline Convents of Nonenwerk and Ahrweiler. One of the Richmond papers actually objects to stocking the Virginia rivers with fish, on the ground that it would " encourage idleness among the people, who, being thus furnished with free food would neglect agriculture."
