CHRISTIAN BROTHERS' SCHOOL PICNIC.

The third annual picnic of the Christian Brothers 1 School took place yesterday week, 30 ult., in Mr. Bland's paddock at Waitati. The attendance was fWly 300 and consisted principally of the school boys ; tuere were also boys who attend the Sunday School, and who are at work during the week. The Rev. Fathers O'Leary and Shechan were present and the Bishop would also have been there had he not been w Tf rCargl ■ The P Bl^ leffc Dunedin by the 10 a.m. train reached vvaitati at 11.30 o'clock, and marched to the paddock selected where they remained till two o'clock, when owing to the inclemency of the weatner they were compelled to adjourn to the.Good Templars' Hall, wnere a varied programme of music, songs and recitations was gone tnrough with, chief amongst them being an overture by the Hibernian JJana which was well rendered, a song by Mr. P. F. Daniel which «icited great applause ; then followed "The Young Orator," arecita--wti y M# C * McMahon; "Tim Flaherty" a song by T. Walker; the « Death of Marmion" by Mr. Daniel, a flute solo by a memberof the band, after which the trial scene from the " Merchant ot Venice was given, the characters being selected from boys any of wnose ages could not have exceeded 10 years ; the cast was as follows :— The Judge, C. Meenan ; Antonio, P. Walker ; The Jew, R. JNoraan ; Portia, C. McMahon ; Bassanio, W. Philp ; Gratiano, J. fccanlan ; The scene was given with great success and gained for tbe boys prolonged applause. Master C. Lynne then gave " The Mulligan Guards" which called forth roars of laughter ; the band tnen gave a selection from " Maritana" with a very pleasing effect. An interval then took place during which the boys had some refresh*?nr!»n -After which various songs and recitations were again given till 6..W when, headed by the band, the boys formed in processian and marched to the railway station, where' a special train was in ™"E' They left a few minutes before 7 and reached town a little after 8.
