News of the Week.
Pontifical High Mass was celebrated at St Joseph's Church, Dunedin, on Sunday last. His Lordship the Bidiop of the Diocese pontificated ; the ltev. Father Crowley acting as Assistant Priest and the llcv. Fathers O'Leary and Shcban as Deacon and Sub-deacon respectively. The vestments lately purchased in London were worn for the first time, and mot with much admiration. They are of cloth of gold, richly embroidered with raised work also in gold, and combine simplicity and splendour in a degree that is most artistic. The Catholic Young Men's Society held a meeting last Friday evening, with a large attendance, the Spiritual Director presiding. The principal portion of the evening was set apart for a debate on the question " Whether tobacco smoking is injurious^or not." After a great amount of discussion on both sides it was resolved that " Tobacco smoking is injurious if indulge.! in to any great extent, and also injurious to persons who have not arrived at a mature age."' The sides were headed by Bros. P. Daniel and A. Norman. The next debate is to be, "Whether the present century has the right to be called a century of advancement in proportion with its predecessors." As the decision of the Canterbury Board of Education on the Lobum cihc has not yet reached us, we defer all comments in connection with the matter to our next issue. We have seen a report of the secretary's investigation, but the special sitting of the Board only took place yesterday, WE learn that the Key. Father Larkin has been transferred to Duneclin, and that the llcv. Father Crowley replaces him at Lawrence.
