HIBERNIAN AUSTRALASIAN CATHOLIC BENEFIT SOCIETY, DUNEDIN BRANCH, No. 73.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the above Branch was held in the South Australian Hall on Monday evening last. A letter was received from the Secretary, Bro. Cantwell, requesting that; the quarterly meeting be deferred for a week. Bro. Cantwell intimated that he would like to be present at the meeting, and that if his request was acceded to, he would be able to be there. The members expressed their pleasure at hearing that their worthy Secretary would soon again be amongst them, and acceded to his request by acclamation. Bro. J. J. Connor moved, and Bro. P. P. Burke seconded, "That the Christchurch, Lyttelton, and Invercargill Branches be written, to, informing them that the Otago and Akaroa Branches are in favor of a District for Otago and Canterbury, and to request the said Branches to come forward and join in the establishment of the district. A lively discussion ensued, in which most of the members took part, after which Bro. E. Carroll moved an amendment, which, when put, was lost — the motion being carried by a large majority. We understand that the E.D. have expressed their satisfaction at the action to establish a district which, now bids fair to become a success. Preparations are being made for opening the district early in January, so that it is to be hoped the Branches above referred to will send in their replies as early as possible.
