Wellington. —For escaping from Porirua Mental Hospital on 18th September last, Roger Cunningham Cromb, age thirty-three, height 5 ft. 9| in., farm hand, native of New Zealand, strong build, fresli complexion, light-brown hair, hazel eyes, scar on left wrist and on base of left thumb; wearing a khaki military overcoat, grey coat, black trousers, shirt marked “ M. 5,” and black boots. On 9th February, 1939, on an indictment for assault with intent to commit rape, he was found insane and unable to plead, and was ordered to be kept in strict custody during the pleasure of the Minister of Justice. On 3rd ultimo he became friendly with complainant and represented himself to be Des Barchard, representative footballer from Auckland. He suggested that they should become engaged and asked complainant for the ring so that be could have an engagement ring of the same size made, but lie disappeared on 12th ultimo without returning the ring. He is also to be interviewed for obtaining credit to the extent of £lO 2s. fid. from the licensee of the Midland Hotel by fraud. He stayed at the hotel under the name “ Barchard,” from the 6th to 12th ultimo, on which date he left without paying for his accommodation.
