PROPERTY STOLEN

Birkenhead.27th or 28th July last, the property of NORMA ADELE HEARS, Beach Road, Birkdale, a black leather handbag with puckered folds on outside, 12 in. by 10 in., two small purses attached inside, two amber-coloured barrel-shaped finger-grips on top, containing £4 10s. in money ; a ladies’ gold oblong wristlet watch, square white dial with “ Craven ” thereon, “ Norma from Alf, 7-8-43 ” on back, glass and hands missing, gold wrist-band of bracelet type ; a gold bracelet with hinge, floral design thereon ; a gentlemen’s small brown leather purse ; and seven ration books ; total value, £22 ss. Identifiable. Complainant may have lost the handbag while travelling on the bus between Birkenhead Wharf and her home, or it may have been stolen from her dwelling.

Auckland. — Between the 26th and 30th May last, from a room at 27 Wynyard Street, the property of HELEN POWELL, a black satin frock with beaded neck and sleeves, probably Du Barry model, S.W. size ; a mustard-coloured slack-suit, brown braid on pockets, brown buttons ; a creamyfawn summer coat, unlined, two brown buttons, pleat in back, S.W. size ; a white summer dress made of sheeting material, square neck, red binding with star design, flared skirt, white sash, S.W. size ; a tan and white skirt with stiff band at waist, hook-fastener at side, S.W. size ; a leather jerkin with beige front and brown velvet back, breast pocket, lace-up at sides ; a pair of tan leather shoes with Cuban heels, size 5, lace on front ; a beige-coloured slip-on right shoe, size 5 ; and an electric heater of half-moon shape with horizontal element, painted black, about 7 ft. flex with lightf adapter attached ; total value, £3O 19s. Identifiable. The offence may have been committed by Ann Mahoney or ' McCarthy, age about twenty, height about 5 ft. 9 in., waitress, native of New Zealand, slight build, fresh complexion, dark hair, hazel eyes, long features, pigeon-toed ; usually wears a black coat. She expressed a liking for the articles described, and during complainant’s absence from her room between above dates the window was unlocked.

Auckland. —l4th or 15th June last, from a room in the Veterans’ Home, Mount Albert Road, the property of ARTHUR EDWARD FOWLER, a gentlemen’s silver Rolex wristlet watch, about 1J in. in diameter, No. 663311 on inside back, black hands and numerals, unbreakable glass, 4 in. leather wrist-strap ; and a black lever-filling Blackbird fountain-pen, 5 in. long, slide-on clip, long gold nib; total value, £3 15s. Watch identifiable.

Auckland. —27th June last, from the dwelling of Sidney Rhodes Speight, watchmaker, 490 Parnell Road, the property of DESMOND KARA, care of Jack Edwards, Springbush, Hastings, and another, a gentlemen’s chromium square Rotary wristlet watch with rounded corners, round white dial, black hands and numerals, “ D.K.” scratched on inside back case, brown leather wrist-strap ; and a ladies’ chromium round Pierce wristlet watch, silver-grey dial, blueblack hands, “ B. Dalziell ” on back, red leather wrist-strap; total value, £ll. Identifiable. The offence may have been committed by Two Men (names unknown) —(1) Age about twenty-five, height about 5 ft. 10 in., thin build, fair hair; wearing grey suit with R.S.A. badge in lapel (no hat). (2) Age about twenty-nine, height about 6 ft., good build, curly black hair, round features, a half-caste Maori ; wearing a leather jacket of American make, and dark-grey trousers ; believed to be employed by the United States Joint Purchasing Board. Complainant was drinking with these two men in the Alexandra Hotel, Parnell Road, and invited them to his dwelling where they were drinking until about 7.30 p.m. on above date. The first-described man was driving a light motortruck which was painted red or dark-brown.

N. Larkman ” or “ N.Z. 414441 ” on them; two open-weave-cotton sports shirts, one pale-blue and the other white, English make, lace-up necks; two boxes of cigars, fifty in each, El Roy Tan and Phillies brands ; four packets of tobacco ; and a rubber finished cape with collar and pockets, fit man 5 ft. 10 in., forms point at rear, four or five buttons on front; total value, £57 7s. Portion identifiable.

- Auckland. —Between the Bth and 25th June last, from the Waitemata Brewery, Great South Road, Papatoetoe, the property of DOMINION BREWERIES, LTD., a grey j h.p. repulsion induction electric motor, A.C., 230 volts, 1430 r.p.m., f in. shaft, bore 4 in. in diameter by {} in., V-pulley with V-belt about 31 in. long; 6 ft. of three-core flex and Sperryn three-pin plug attached a clamp-on bracket-lamp with two adjustable .arms, enamel reflector, made in Austria, about 8 ft. of flex with three-pin plug and key switch lamp holder ; a carpet, 12 ft. by 9 ft. with futuristic design in autumn tonings, slightly moth-eaten on one side; thick brown underfelt, same size as carpet, may be in sections ; and 15 lb. of sugar ; total value, £3B ss. Identifiable except sugar. .

Auckland. —lßth or 19th June last, from a store in Kitchener Street, the property of J. B. O’LOGHLEN, LTD., Wright’s Buildings, Fort Street, a hydraulic bottle jack, cylindrical shape with square base and round top, 12 in. high, painted blue, attachment for handle at base ; value, £ls. Identifiable.

Auckland. —llth July last, from a luggage-room in the Waverley Hotel, the property of HERBERT ANSTIS CRAIG, 12 Lerwick Terrace, Lyall Bay, Wellington, a brown fibrecane suitcase, 24 in. by 16 in. by 8 in., two locks, and two leather half-straps; a Relax double-breasted lightweight oilskin overcoat, similar to those issued to W.A.A.C.; a two-piece blue-grey suit with white stripes about | in. apart, trousers pocket on right side repaired, back of coat repaired with piece removed from inside left side of collar ; a pair of black wooden hairbrushes in hand-stitched brown leather case, 6 in. by 4 in. by 3 in. ; four pairs of socks, grey or grey and blue tonings ; a grey Point-Setter shirt with black stripes, two collars to match with laundry mark “ J.M.P.” thereon ; a blue and white collar with laundry mark “ J.M.P.” thereon ; a khaki tie ; four blue ties ; a light-weight sleeveless cotton singlet; a pair of short underpants ; six handkerchiefs, most of which are white; a pair of black shoes, size 7, welt on inside of right shoe repaired ; two cardboard boxes containing first-aid outfit; a pair of light-brown leather gloves, size 7; and a brown cotton scarf with white spots ; total value, £l6 9s. Identifiable.

Auckland. 24th or 25th July last, from the dwelling of IRENE MAY KINNEALLY, 23 Hamilton Road, Herne Bay, a red perforated patent-leather handbag of envelope shape, 16 in. by 9 in., two compartments, snap-fastener, handle at back, containing an Auckland Savings-bank book, No. 255279 ; a black Parker fountain-pen with gold mountings and “ Life-time ” nib ; a black leather folding wallet, 6 in. by 4 in. ; a silver cigarette-case with “ A.F.H.” on front, holds twelve cigarettes ; an 18 ct. gold neck-chain with pinkish tinge, about 12 in. long with small pendant made up of two half-pennies, ship on one side and tiki on other ; three keys; a small black leather purse containing ss. in stamps ; £3 in money ; and sundry papers; total value, £l3 17s. 6d. Identifiable except money and stamps.

Auckland. — July last, from clothing in the changeroom at McKendrick Bros., sack and bottle merchants, Wellington Street, the property of JOSEPH RONALD CROAWELL, a gentlemen’s silver oblong wristlet watch, E. Borel make, with round green dial, luminous numerals, portion of seconds-hand missing, repair No. H. 11042 X scratched on inside back, black leather wrist-strap; value, £8 13s. Identifiable.

Auckland. —On the 4th ultimo, the dwelling of Constable JOHN BELL, 79 St. John’s Road, Remuera, was broken into and the following stolen: A cream-coloured enamel cube-shaped Westclox alarm clock, 4 in. by 4 in., luminous hands and Arabic numerals ; a silver jewel-box, 4 in. by 3 in., hinged lid with chrysanthemum design thereon, padded lining and legs ; a small gilt chain with pendant of three drops (largest in centre) suspended therefrom, Florentine wave, mosaic style; an oval brooch in coarse mosaic and Florentine waves, blue background with design of coloured flowers, small gold plait around edge, pin and catch fastener; a gold (probably 18 ct.) fine link chain, about 19 in. long, link broken near snap-fastener; a blue enamel and gold brooch with representation of two kookaburras painted thereon ; a graduated crystal necklace with silver links and fastener ; a greenstone tiki mounted on silver tie-pin, fastener missing ; a silver brooch with “ Melbourne Centenary ” thereon; a silver brooch with “ Victoria ” and representation of an Australian animal on it; a silver brooch with filigree work on it, set with coloured stones the centre one of which is missing ; a 9 ct. gold signet ring, shield-shaped top with “ D ” thereon, band broken near shield ; and a three-cell Hong Kong electric torch with large spotlight head ; total value, £24 10s. Identifiable.

Auckland. —6th ultimo, the ... property of GLORIA VERONICA McKENNA, 549 Karangahape Road, a handbag; a driver’s license; and sundry papers (all recovered); about £4O in money, made up of seven £5 and four £1 notes and £1 in silver; total value, £42. Complainant inadvertently left the handbag in a telephone cabinet in Newton Road near the Star Hotel, and shortly after-the following-described Man (name unknown) was seen leaving the cabinet carrying something under his arm: Age about fifty-five, stout build, ruddy complexion, round face; wearing a raincoat similar to gaberdine, and felt hat. The handbag, &c., were subsequently found in Western Park.

Auckland. On the 30th or 31st ultimo, the shop of LEWIS EADY, LTD., 192 Queen Street, was broken into, the safe opened by means of explosives, and the following stolen : £2OB Is. 9d. in money.

Hamilton. — 11th April last, from Victoria Street, the property of NOEL STORRIER JOHNSON, 8 Hardley Street, a 1939 model Ford V 8 coupe motor-car, painted seagull-grey, engine No. 016527 F., registration-plates No. 79,637, 1944-45 license No. 43,945, left rear mudguard damaged and red priming paint showing ; value, £3OO. Identifiable.

Hamilton. — Between the 21st and 23rd July last, the property of CHARLES KENNAWAY LOWE, engineer, Karapiro, a putter, one each of the following irons, Nos. 2, 3,4, 5,6, 7, and 8, all Forgan brand with steel shafts and red leather grips which have been marked with a small handsaw giving herringbone effect; three wooden golf clubs consisting of a driver, brassy, and a spoon, J. Mowat brand with steel shafts, black leather grips with similar markings to those described above ; a khaki drill golf jacket with bone buttons ; and a pair of tan brogue shoes, size 6 ; total value, £25 17s. fid. Golf clubs identifiable. On 21st July last, complainant’s motor-car was unlawfully removed from Grantham Street, and when it was recovered on 23rd July last, outside the R.N.Z.A.F. Camp, Clarence Street, the property described had been stolen.

Hamilton. — On the Bth ultimo, the shop of RICHARD ALEXANDER HUGHES, gentlemen’s outfitter, Victoria Street, Cambridge, was broken into and the following stolen : A gentlemen’s blue-grey double-breasted overcoat with herringbone pattern, size 6, quarter lined, Regent, Auckland, brand on inside back ; value, £l2. Identifiable. The offence may have been committed by Two Men (names unknown), height of each about about 5 ft. 6 in., one wearing a sports coat with checks and the other a dark overcoat. They were seen running from complainant’s shop at 3.40 a.m. on above date. On Bth ultimo, an overcoat similar to that described was offered for sale in Hamilton by John Michael George Johnson, referred to in Police Gazette, 1945, page 045, and Photographs, 1936, page 32, who stated that he had stolen it in Cambridge, When located he is to be interviewed,regarding the offence.* - * cSw4 wjumd Hhi iL- s

Ngongotaha. —Between December last and 6th March, the property of HEREMON JAMES DRUMMOND O’NEILL, Valley Road, a ladies’ navy-blue camel-hair overcoat with brown fur collar, lined with navy-blue crepe de Chine, two square pockets ; a fawn Stone Martin fur stole ; a white three-quarter-size blanket; a white double blanket; seven dinner plates, six bread-and-butter and four soup plates, white with blue band £ in. wide; six fish knives and forks ; six each of table and dessert spoons ; six stainless butter knives with ivory handles ; a carving knife and steel with white handles; two silver oval sweet dishes; and two silver round vases, one 4 in. high and the other 8 in. (all Walker and Hall brand); total value, £SO Is. Identifiable. Complainant stored some property in Williamson’s Garage, Taupo, and had it delivered to his home on 29th February last, but when a check was made on 6th March last the articles described were missing.

Gisborne. 2nd or 3rd July last, from a passage in the Gisborne Hotel, the property of HARRY FREDERICKSON, farmer, Dannevirke, and others, two pairs of gentlemen’s shoes (recovered); two pairs of gentlemen’s black heavy shoes, size 10; and a pair of ladies’ brown shoes, size 4, brogue type; total value, £lO. Identifiable. The shoes were stolen from outside bedroom doors in the hotel, and those recovered were found in possession of a drover who stated that he purchased them on 3rd July last at the corner of Peel and Gladstone Roads from a Man (name unknown), whose description is similar to that of the man described below who on 2nd July last left as security with Walter Wilson, licensee, Matawhero Hotel, for a loan of £2, a Sportsply Majestic tennis racquet with “ For Tournament Play ” on handle, patent leather bound grip, strung with winecoloured gut, white enamel finish, with press. Description : J. L. C. Johansen (name probably fictitious), age about forty, height about 5 ft. 10 in., medium build, dark complexion and hair; wearing a grey overcoat, navy-blue suit, and felt hat. It is believed that the racquet and press may have been stolen.

Taumarunui. —9th or 10th July last, from a Ford 8 motorcar on a lawn at 309 Taupo Road, the property of ALFRED WILLIAM SCOTT, two wire wheels, painted green, each fitted with a 450 by 17 Goodyear Marathon tire, serial Nos. 194K725N and 103K625N respectively, and a black tube; total value, £22. Identifiable.

NAPlEß.—Between the 16th and 18th June last, the shop of HERBERT BOTTOM, hairdresser and tobacconist, Hastings Street, was broken into and the following stolen : A model 9 Oster electric haircutting machine, serial No. 5473, about 6 ft. of black flex attached, four blades, sizes 0,1, 3, and 4 ; a pair of nickel-steel scissors with fingerrest on heel of handle, Webster-and Butt brand; and eight bottles of hair cream, Nukreem and Top Hat brands; total value, £2l 12s. Identifiable except hair cream.

Palmerston North. —Between March last and 4th instant, from a shed at 268 Albert Street, the property of RICHARD JOHN BEDDINGFIELD, a 9mm. calibre Luger automatic pistol, No. 7863, made in Erfurt (Germany); value, about £5. Identifiable.

Palmerston North. 2sth July last, the property of NANA DAYAL, Grand Hotel, Church Street, a gentlemen’s 9 ct. gold round wristlet watch, slightly larger than standard size, white dial, black Roman numerals, chronometer movement fitted with stop-watch action, five hands, stop-button near winder, 18 ct. gold wrist-band with slide-fastener; value, £25. Identifiable. Complainant carried the watch in his trousers pocket, and he may have lost it, but it may have been stolen while he was asleep as a result of heavy drinking on above date.

Eastbourne. —About 27th ultimo, from the dwelling of CHARLES WILLIAM HIBBARD, Kowhai Street, a -22 calibre Savage repeating rifle, No. 112145; value, about £6 10s. Identifiable. t J » tzfb/sy. Wellington. —On the 13th or 14th ultimo, the shop of CHER AND CO., LTD., furriers and tailors, 42 Manners Street, was broken into and the following stolen : A lightbeige flank musquash fur coat, Peter Pan collar, S.W. size, two buttons; and a brown kid coat with stripes, S.W. size; total value, £6O. Identifiable.

Greymouth. —The property of the NEW ZEALAND GOVERNMENT (Army Department), a -303 calibre Magazine Lee-Enfield rifle (8.5. A.), No. 5988/14E., body No. A/44413, barrel No. 4667 D, bolt No. 2191; value, about £3. Identifiable. The rifle was impressed at Reefton on 15th May, 1941, for the use of Home Guardsmen, but it cannot now be found.
