On above date he obtained goods, value £l9 2s. 3d. and £l7 15s. 6d. in money from Ernest Wilfred Caudwell, mercer, Devonport Road, by means of a valueless cheque for £36 18s. 9d., No. A 948667, drawn on the Bank of New Zealand, Te Aroha, in favour of R. On above date complainant dropped the wallet in Cole’s Billiard Saloon, and shortly after it was handed to the proprietor. Later the same day offender became aware of complainant’s loss and the description of the contents. He called on the proprietor and claimed the wallet which was handed to him. Description : A dark-green imitation leather wallet of folding type, 5 in. by 3| in. ; two £1 notes ; a clarionet reed; a saxophone reed;, and % two TaurangaHamilton train tickets which had been used one way Wallet and reeds identifiable.

New Plymouth. —l6th ultimo, on warrant for false pretences, Jack Connell, age about fifty-two, height about 5 ft. 10 in., native of New Zealand, good build, fresh complexion, dark hair turning grey ; wearing a dark suit and felt hat; pleasant disposition fond of drink. On above date he obtained £5 in money from Edward O’Rielly, licensee, Terminus Hotel, by means of a valueless cheque for that amount, No. A 321582, drawn on the Bank of New Zealand, Inglewood, in favour of “ Cash,” and signed “ J. Connell.” The cheque is from a cheque-book, Nos. A/321577-600 which contained twenty-one forms when stolen from John McDonald Hutchieson at Inglewood on 14th ultimo. The photograph of John Laurence O’Connell, referred to in Police Gazette, 1945, page 137, and Photographs, 1934, page 60, has been identified as that of offender. A V '

Palmerston North.— 27th ultimo, on warrant for bigamy, Ernest Andrew Manchester, age sixty-three, height 5 ft. 7 in., labourer and dealer, native of New Zealand, sallow complexion, grey hair, blue eyes, clasped hands on right forearm. On 15th November, 1913, he married Maria Broderick at St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, Surrey Hills, Sydney (Australia), and on 22nd September, 1939, being then married, he went through a form of marriage with Lettice Elleanor Fenton at the office of the Registrar of Marriages, Palmerston North, New Zealand. Wellington. —2lst March last, for theft of the property described below, value £25 155., the property of Juliet Williams, and others, 62 Hobson Street, J. Davison (name probably fictitious), age about twenty-five, height about 5 ft. 10 in., porter, slight build, fair complexion and hair, impediment in speech probably as a result of a cleft palate ; well dressed in a blue suit with stripes. On above date the property was stolen from complainant’s dwelling at above address, and later the same day the recovered articles were sold to a second-hand dealer in Vivian Street, for £2 by the man described. Description: A Baby Ben clock ; a travelling clock; a bracelet; a rhinestone necklace ; a pair of earrings; an ear-ring; and two brooches (all recovered); a darkbrown leather wallet, fold-over type, about 4 in. by 3 in.; a chromium-plated cigarette-lighter, about 2 in. by 1J in.; and £6 ss. in money. No warrant.
