PERSONS WANTED

Auckland. — 13th November last, for assault and robbery, Man (name unknown). At about 1.5 a.m. on above date Albert Hong Duk, who is partially crippled, alighted from his motor-car outside his home at 219 Hobson Street, and while removing a part of the mechanism from the distributor, he was attacked by an unknown man, who robbed him of the following described property: A black leather wallet, 34 in. by 2 in., three compartments ; a motor driver’s license in complainant’s name, issued by the Auckland City Council in June last; an Auckland Automobile Association card in complainant’s name, issued on Ist September last; an Alien Registration certificate in complainant’s name, No. 2461, issued at Auckland on 7th September, 1939 ; about £ls in wages stamps of various denominations; a warrant of fitness for motor-car, registration-plates No. 118-189, issued by Cadman’s Garage, Auckland, on 17th May last; al4 ct. gold dress watch, about 1£ in. in diameter, white dial, gold Arabic numerals, gold seconds-hand; a 9 ct. gold chain of fetter and two ovals type, about 12 in. long, swivel at one end with about 4 in. of metal chain, a cigar-cutter, a nailclipper, two small keys, and a corkscrew attached thereto ; and £366 in money made up of £5, £l, and 10s. notes ; total value, £393 12s. Identifiable except money and stamps. No warrant.

Auckland. —About 25th November last, for alleged theft of £9 10s. in money, the property of Eldon Clunie Drake, Falls Road, Waerenga, Ray Purves, age about thirty-two, height about 5 ft. 8 in., thin build, dark complexion, black hair, brown eyes, no lower teeth, rising sun above “ N.Z.” and a number which may be “ 391722 ” on one arm ; wearing a fawn overcoat with herringbone pattern, brown sports coat, blue-grey trousers, and a grey hand-knitted pullover. On 18th November last, complainant met offender on the Auckland-Wellington express and invited him to his home. Offender arrived at complainant’s home on the 22nd and stayed until the 27th November last. He informed complainant that he was an engineer on an American ship berthed at Auckland and that he was able to supply him with a small refrigerator from the ship for £9 10s. Complainant paid Purves the money, but he has not received the refrigerator. He may be identical with Raymond George Purves, referred to in Police Gazette, 1944, page 529. Wellington. —3oth December last, for a breach of his probation (Offenders Probation Act, 1920), Raymond George Purves, referred to in Police Gazette, 1944, page 529, and preceding paragraph. He has failed to report to a Probation Officer, and his arrest is desired. J /

Whakatane. —7th instant, that he be located and interviewed regarding his ability to maintain his five children in the care of the Education Department, Laurie Rossiter, alias Benneitereferred to in Police Gazette, 1944, page 874.

Patutahi. — 18th ultimo, for theft of a horse, saddle, and bridle (recovered), value £25 10s., the property of Alfred Ernest Stevens, J. Battle, age about thirty, height about 5 ft. 8 in., blacksmith, native of New Zealand, slight build, dark complexion, scratch on nose. On above date the horse, saddle, and bridle were stolen from Wairoa Road, and were subsequently recovered at Mahurangi Station, Wairoa, where they had been sold for £l3 on the 19th ultimo by the man described. National Park. — For escaping from the Mental Hospital, The Chateau, on 24th ultimo, Isobel Lucy Bryant, age fiftyfour (looks younger); height 4 ft. 11 in., widow, native of New Zealand, medium build, fresh complexion, dark hair turning grey, brown eyes, artificial teeth ; wearing a green cotton frock with floral pattern, light-coloured stockings, and red slippers (no hat), quick gait.

Napier. December, 1943, for alleged false pretences, Roy O’Shea, age about sixty, height about 5 ft. 5J in., chef, native of New Zealand, medium build, dark complexion, grey hair, impediment in speech; wearing a green sports coat, grey sports trousers, and green hat. On above date he obtained £SO in money from Annie Davidson, Riverbend Road, with whom he was employed at the Central Hotel, by representing that he owned a house property in Wellington, and that he required the money to pay off a mortgage to enable him to sell the property. He left Napier on 10th March, 1944, and inquiries reveal that there is no record of his having owned property in Wellington. _ The photograph of Ronald O’Shea, alias Robert Ruff, referred to in Police Gazette, 1938, page 573, and Photographs,. 1926, page 39, has been identified as that of offender. Wellington. — lst instant, that lie he located and interviewed regarding the publishing of obscene matter, Rex Lane or R. Lane, age about thirty, height about 5 ft. 6 in., seaman and storeman-packer, native of Australia, darkbrown hair, long features, right hip apparently deformed, lame ; wearing uniform of Merchant Navy. Notes of an obscene nature were found in tins of caustic soda purchased by W. McLeod, Oamaru, and B. Sandielands, Feilding. . The soda was packed by R. H. Armstrong and Co. (N.Z.), Ltd., Thomdon Quay, and inquiries reveal that Lane was employed by that firm between the 6th May last and 6th August, and that his handwriting is similar to that found on the notes. On Bth August last he left this Dominion as a member of the crew of the ship “ Ruahine,” and was paid off at Liverpool (England) on 30th October last. No warrant.

Wellington. 2lst December last, on warrant of commitment to Wellington Prison for one month in default of paying £l2 11s. 6d. arrears on a maintenance order for the support of his child, Eric Hendes, alias Eric George Hondas, referred to in Police Gazette, 1944, page 518. He left the Dominion on 29th June last as a member of the crew of the ship “ Highland Princess.”

On above date he was in charge of the Hot Dog Cafe, Farish Street,-and complainant instructed him to change £5 in notes from the till for £5 in half-crowns which were in a drawer. He left shortly after and it was then discovered that the half-crowns had been stolen.
