Auckland. — escaping from custody, Richard Humphreys, referred to in Police Gazette, 1942, page 175, and Photographs, 1941, page 24. He was under military escort from Sydney (Australia) to Auckland, and on arrival was to be handed over to the police for prosecution on criminal charges, but at 2.15 a.m. on the 13th instant, he eluded his guard on the ship and dived into the Waitemata Harbour. On the 15th instant he is believed to have forced an entry into the garage of Frederick William Hayes, 24 Wheturangi Road, One Tree Hill, and unlawfully removed a 10 h.p. twodoor fawn sedan Humber motor-car, engine No. 1121543, chassis No. 1118459, registration No. 130-383; value £350. The same night the following property was stolen from the garage of Arthur Alton Bodley, Great South Road: A gentlemen’s dark-grey woollen overcoat, size 5, half-lined, a dark-grey scarf with white checks; £3 cash; and a Ford standard motorcar clock; total value about £8; and from the Triangle Service Station, Great South Road, five two-gallon tins of petrol. Humphreys may unlawfully use motor cars and affix stolen registration plates to them.

He obtained £8 in money from Ivy Pearce, clerk, Commercial Hotel, by means of a valueless cheque for £lO, No. A. 661607, drawn on the Bank of Australasia, Timaru, in favour of “ Cash,” and signed “ C. W. Williams,” which be tendered in payment of £2 for his accommodation. He stated that he is the licensee of the Pukaki Hotel. Holmes, age about forty, height 5 ft. 10 in., native of New Zealand, medium build, ruddy complexion, dark hair, brown eyes; dressed in a blue serge suit with pin-point stripes and blue or black felt hat. He obtained £ls cash from Victor James Barnes, licensee, Royal Hotel, by means of a valueless cheque for that amount, No. A. 661614 drawn on the Bank of Australasia, Timaru, in favour of “ cash,” and signed “C. W. Holmes.” He had arranged to commence work as a barman for complainant on the 25th ultimo, and was staying at the hotel, but disappeared after cashing the cheque. He is believed to be identical with Charles William Grimmond Home, referred to in preceding and following paragraphs. No warrant.

Middlemakch. —18th April last, on warrant for false pretences, Charles William Home. He is believed to be identical with Charles William Grimmond Home, referred to in preceding paragraph. He obtained liquor and cash amounting to £5 from Henry Tasman Jones, licensee, Strath Taieri Hotel, by means of a valueless cheque for that amount drawn on the Bank of Australasia, Timaru, and signed “C. New Plymouth. —2Bth June, 1941, on warrant for theft of a bicycle (recovered), value £ls, the property of Rigden Baynes, 200 Tukapa Street, Robert Creed, referred to in Police Gazette, 1942, page 373. On above date the bicycle wq,s stolen from Devon Street and later sold for £2 10s. to a second-hand dealer. The offender has been interviewed and admitted the offence.

New Plymouth. — l6th March last, on warrant for failing to report for service with the armed forces when notified so to do, Norman Eric Waite, age thirty-three, height 5 ft. 5J in., builder and carpenter, native of New Zealand, slight build, fresh complexion, light-brown hair, blue eyes, mark on one wrist, sharp features ; usually dressed in a brown sports suit. Roberts, age about forty-five, height about 5 ft. 8 in., probably native of New Zealand, medium build, dark complexion and hair, thin features ; wearing a navy-blue suit with gold-coloured wings badge in lapel, brown felt hat, and carrying a blue raincoat; appearance of a farmer. He obtained £3 15s. cash from Elizabeth Catherine Thurston, Melba Toilet Salon, 211 High Street, by means of a valueless cheque for £5, No. 69141, drawn on the Bank of New Zealand, Nelson, in ' favour of G. Roberts, and signed “J. Armstrong.” He arranged for a permanent wave for his wife, and tendered the cheque in payment of £1 ss. in advance for it. He may be identical with William George Thomas, referred to in Police Gazette, 1942, page 344, and Photographs, 1933, page 58. The cheque is one of those referred to in Police Gazette, 1941, page 479, as having been stolen from William Gould. N. warrant.

Taihape. —4th instant, on warrant of commitment to Wanganui Prison for three days in default of paying £3 fine and costs for being found on the licensed premises of the New Taihape Hotel during prohibited hours, Joseph George Jordon. He is identical with Joseph George Jordan, referred to in Police Gazette, 1942, page 373, and Photographs, 1933, page 70. . / ✓ /

Feilding.— l4th April last, for theft of a bicycle (recovered), value £l2, the property of Doris Lillian McLeod, 36 Gladstone Street, R. Hensley (name probably fictitious), age about thirty-five, height about 5 ft. 3 in., good build, slightly tanned complexion, dark-brown hair, dark eyes ; dressed in a dark suit, black shoes, and dark felt hat; smart appearance ; erect gait ; plausible and speaks quickly. On above date the bicycle was stolen from Goodbehere Street and sold for £3 to a second-hand dealer by the man described above. He may be identical with R. Baldwin, referred to in Police Gazette, 1942, page 426. No warrant.

Lower Hutt.— l3th ultimo, for false pretences, G. M. Moore. He obtained a cheque for £5 from Elizabeth Perry, 85 Pretoria Street, by falsely representing that he was an agent of Australian Termite Co., and that a preparation (believed to be naphthalene) would permanently exterminate wood insects. The photograph of Harold Richardson Kerr, referred to in Police Gazette, 1942, page 480, and Photographs, 1937, page 34, has been identified as that of offender. No warrant (J-. /9 f +2 .

Wellington. 9th September last, on warrant for failing to enrol in the First Division of the General Reserve, John Henry Cornish, referred to in Police Gazette, 1939, page 654; dressed in a double-breasted dark suit with stripes (no hat); frequents billiard-saloons, gaming-houses, and agricultural shows. He is also to be interviewed regarding breaches of the Oil Fuel Emergency Regulations and the Rental Vehicle Regulations, informations for which have been laid in the name J. Cornish. He is also known by the names Jack Cornish and Reginald James Cornish.

Wellington. —2sth ultimo, on warrant for deserting from the ship “ Temeraire,” Joseph Chunn, age twenty-three, height 5 ft. 8 in., seaman, native of Canada, medium build, brown hair, blue eyes ; scar on right ring-firmer.
