Constable required for Duty at Rarotonga, Cook Islands. Applications will be received up to 30th instant from married Constables of over three years’ service without children or with only very young ones for the purpose of selecting a Constable for duty at Rarotonga, Cook Islands, to fill the position of Chief Police Officer, who also holds the appointments of Gaoler, Bailiff of the High Court, Censor of Cinematograph Films, and Registrar of Motor Vehicles. The salary will be at the rate of the appointee’s New Zealand pay, plus a tropical allowance of £IOO per annum. There are no other emoluments. A house is provided together with heavy furniture (except bedding, cooking utensils, crockery, &c.), for which a rental of £36 per annum will be charged. The Constable selected will require to furnish a medical certificate of fitness of himself, wife, and family for residence in the tropics, and must also enter into an agreement to remain in the Cook Islands for a period of three years. No Constable whose own health, or that of his wife or children, is not good should apply. Steamer fares to Rarotonga for the Constable, his wife, and family up to two children will be paid by the Cook Islands Department, also the return fares, provided the Constable serves continuously for a minimum period of three years or the appointment is terminated by the Administration through no fault of the appointee.

The cost of transport to Rarotonga of household effects other than furniture will be paid by the Department, but no payment will be made in connection with the disposal or storage of furniture in New Zealand. The Constable will retain his seniority and superannuation rights in the New Zealand Police Force. Applications are to be forwarded through the Officer in Charge of the district, who, when transmitting them to this office, will report as to the fitness or otherwise of applicants for the position. Circular No. 8/41.] Travelling-allowances. 1. The following scale of travelling-allowances payable to members of the Force has been approved under Regulations Nos. 491 and 492, to take effect from Ist October, 1941 : Superintendants, Inspectors, and SubInspectors .. .. .. 20s. per diem. Senior Sergeants, Senior Detectives, Sergeants, and Detective-Sergeants .. 17s. (id. per diem. Constables, Detectives, and Acting-De-tectives .. .. .. .. 15s. per diem. 2. The allowance shall be for each day of twenty-four hours a member is absent from his station on duty, and the day shall be deemed to commence at the hour at which the member leaves his station. 3. For any portion of a day the rate shall be one twentyfourth of the full daily rate for each hour’s absence. In computing the time of absence a fraction of an hour, if less than half an hour, shall not be taken into account, but half an hour or more shall be reckoned as one hour. 4. When a member leaves and returns to his station the same day, actual reasonable expenses only shall be paid. 5. When a member travels over-night by steamer and sleeping accommodation is provided for him thereon, his claim for travelling-allowance must be reduced by one-fourth of a day’s allowance. 6. A commissioned officer travelling over-night by train may engage an ordinary sleeping-berth, and will be granted a refund of the cost on production of a receipt for same, but in such case his claim for travelling-allowance must be reduced by one-quarter of a day’s allowance. 7. In all claims for travelling-allowance and expenses the date and time of departure from and return to station shall be shown, and the duty on which the member was travelling must be definitely stated. . nlj <3 S/S'/AL

Allowances for Relieving or Temporary Duty. 8. When members of the Force (other than commissioned officers) are sent to another station on relieving or temporary duty, for more than one week, travelling-allowance according to the above scale shall be payable for the first week, and for the subsequent period allowance shall be payable at the following rates :

Senior Sergeants, Senior Detectives, Sergeants, and Detective-Sergeants .. .. Bs. per diem. Constables, Detectives, and Acting-Detectives 7s. per diem. Such members shall while in receipt of this reduced allowance be entitled to claim a refund of any actual expenses incurred during absence on duty from the station at which they are doing relieving or temporary duty. Transfer Expenses. 9. Members of the Force on transfer with their wives and families who are unable to obtain house accommodation immediately after arrival at their destination will be allowed the actual cost of board and lodgings at a reasonable rate for not more than seven days. Only 50 per cent, of the actual cost will be allowed for any period after the first seven days ; but where exceptional circumstances are shown to exist a reasonable amount in excess of 50 per cent, may be authorized by the Commissioner. Travelling by Steamer. 10. Members of the Force travelling by steamer on duty may travel first-class except when escorting prisoners when they must travel second-class with the prisoners. 11. Members of the Force travelling by sea on a journey occupying more than twenty-four hours shall be entitled to ordinary travelling-allowance as provided in paragraph 1 hereof for the first day and 2s. 3d. per diem for each subsequent day at sea. 12.
