He left this Dominion for England in January last as a member of the crew of the ship “ Dorset.” He may be released on payment of £2O. Accused obtained £l3 16s. 3d. from Edward Henry Cucksey, licensee, Te Awamutu Hotel, by means of a valueless cheque for that amount. There arc other charges pending. • '

New Plymouth. —3rd September last, on warrant of commitment to Auckland Prison for two months in default of paying £152 ss. arrears on a maintenance order for the support of his wife and two children, Christopher Thompson, age forty-two, height 5 ft. 8 in., labourer, native of England, dark complexion, dark-brown hair, brown eyes. Wanganui. —loth instant, for (1) forging a cheque for £3O on the Union Bank of Australia, Wanganui, in favour of J. Murdock, signed P. Healey, and dated 10th March, 1941, and (2) uttering on the 10th instant the same cheque to Daniel Bonner, Sweeney, alias Murdock. He was dressed in a brown suit with faint white stripes, the trousers of which are short and do not come down over the tops of his boots, light-brown hat, and black boots with heavy soles; fond of drink. Accused, who booked in at the Albion Hotel on the Ist instant under the name Sweeney, but was also known at the hotel by the name Murdock, represented to the licensee, Daniel Bonner, that he was connected with horse-racing and knew a “ good thing ” for the New Plymouth races. The licensee’s wife gave him £2 to invest on the horse. Later he informed Mr. and Mrs. Bonner that the horse had won and that they would receive £lO or £l2. He stayed at the hotel to the 10th instant on which date he obtained a blank cheque-form from Margaret Mary O’Brien, wife of the licensee of the Metropolitan Hotel, filled it in for £3O, forged the signature “ P. Healey” to it, and returned to the Albion Hotel where he uttered it to the licensee, Mr. Bonner, stating that he had collected it from Peter Healey, a well-known bookmaker in Wanganui. After deducting his own and his wife’s supposed winnings, and also the amount owing by accused for board and lodgings, the licensee gave him £7 change. The photograph of Arthur McKeever, referred to in Police Gazette, 1941, page 33, and Photographs, 1922, page 104, has been identified as that of accused. No warrant.

Blenheim. lst June, 1940, on warrant for theft of a gentlemen’s bicycle (recovered), value £lO 10s., the property of Gordon John Chapman, Main Street, R. W. Watson (name probably fictitious), age twenty-two, height 5 ft. 10 in., Maori, dark complexion and hair. The bicycle was stolen from outside the Working-men’s Club, and next morning the man described above sold it for £3 to Arthur Shipley, Rapaura, from whom he obtained lodging the preceding night.

Oamaru. —2nd January last, for false pretences, Jack Brophy (name probably fictitious), age about forty-three, height 6 ft., farm labourer, slight build, fair complexion, dark hair, blue eyes, small lump on one side of nose, narrow square face and chin, long scar from breast-bone to lower part of abdomen usually dressed in a dark-blue doublebreasted suit of square cut, and navy-blue hat. Accused obtained a tin of Park Drive tobacco, some cigarette papers value 2s. 9d., and £9 17s. 3d. in money from Donald William Creegan, grocer, 264 Thames Street, by means of a valueless cheque for £lO, No. 768972, drawn on the Bank of New Zealand, Queenstown, in favour of H. Johnson, and signed “R. Mac Kay.” The cheque-form is one of two stolen from the cheque-book of David Mackie, farmer, Arrowtown, and a man known by the name Jack Brophy worked on Mackie’s farm between the 22nd and 30th December last, and he is suspected of the offence. The other stolen cheque, No. 768971, was cashed at Gore on the Bth January last by the same offender. No warrant.
