Escapee from Custody.

Auckland. The above are photographs of Richard Humphreys who escaped from custody on the 30th ultimo. Description : Age twenty-two, height 5 ft. 11£ in., mechanic, native of New Zealand, medium build, fresh complexion, brown hair, hazel eyes; dressed in dark trousers, blue jersey with polo neck, leather overcoat, and brown shoes (no hat). On the 30th ultimo, at Auckland, he was sentenced to two years in a Borstal Institution on a charge of theft, and while being escorted to Waikeria Borstal Institution he jumped from the train near Te Awamutu. (See Police Gazette, 1941, page 110.)

Yacht Stolen. Tauranc.a. — the night of the 3rd-4th instant, a yacht was stolen from its moorings at Mount Maunganui. It is described as a short-ended keeler, 5 h.p. engine, 20 ft. long at waterline, single mast 27 ft. high, cabin top with two portholes on each side, mainsail has “ 7 ” on one side, bowsprit 2 ft. thick, spreader 7 ft. from top of mast, no name on yacht, but life-belt has “ Jannette ”on it; value, £250. Identifiable. It contained a McMachell portable wireless; prism binoculars; a box-type brass floating compass ; a grey flannel coat with tear above pocket; a chocolatecoloured blazer with yellow stripes; a dark-grey woollen vest; a pair of grey flannel trousers converted to shorts; a pair of brown whipcord trousers; a pair of brown leather shoes with red rubber soles, size 8 ; a light-blue shirt with 16 in. collar ; a grey and black interwoven cap, size 7-| ; two dark-grey single blankets; a large brown rug; and a large fawn Le Roy raincoat; total value, £29. Suspicion is attached to Richard Humphreys, referred to above, whose. photograph has been identified as that of a man who on the 3rd instant at Mount Maunganui purchased a supply of groceries, petrol, and a twelve-gallon drum for water. At 12.30 a.m. on the 4th instant this drum was seen being rolled by two men near the Salisbury Wharf. The second man is described as age about thirty, height about 5 ft. 6 in., good build; wearing shorts; no hat or coat. The yacht is the property of Jocelyn Charles Dumbleton.
