Auckland. — On or about the 22nd August last, for false pretences, Myra Shelker, age about nineteen, height 5 ft. 7 in., domestic and factory worker, native of New Zealand, medium build, dark complexion and hair, visits hotel lounges, danceballs, and sly-grog shops; wears a black coat and black turban hat. Accused obtained £2 Bs. 3d. in money from Pearl Gordon, assistant in the Cabaret Photography, His Majesty’s Arcade, by means of a valueless cheque for £2 10s., No. Z. 38285, drawn on the National Bank of New Zealand, Onehunga, signed “ W. J. Moore,” which she tendered in payment for a photograph. The cheque was stolen from the cheque-book of William John Moore, 41 Queen Street, Onehunga, where accused was staying. July last accused obtained the radio described below from Frank Wiseman, Ltd., radiodealers, 170 Queen Street, by paying a deposit of £7 and signing an agreement to pay the balance at the rate of £4 per month. In incurring the liability he obtained credit by fraudulently representing that his address was 27 Prospect Terrace, that he was employed by Checker Taxis, and that he was known to Gilbert Cornwall, Tivoli Theatre : A dark walnut all-wave English upright model H.M.V. radio, 24 in. by 20 in. by 14 in., No. 653, serial No. 019863, value £35 10s. Identifiable. No warrant.

Auckland. 2nd or 3rd September last, for theft from Walter Henry Overton, licensee, Clarendon Hotel, of a letter containing a cheque for £45 4s. 6d., drawn on the National Bank of New Zealand, Auckland, in favour of Clarendon Hotel, signed G. S. Clark (cheque recovered). George Thomas * Nelson, age thirty-nine, height 5 ft. 9£ in., salesman, native's of New Zealand, thin build, pale complexion, brown hair, blue eyes, large nose, mole on chest and below right temple ; usually well dressed in a greenish suit and dark horn-rimmed glasses (sec Police Gazette, 1933, page 712, and Photographs, 1925, page 27.) The cheque was stolen from the office of the Clarendon Hotel, and was uttered to Winstone’s Ltd. in payment for a ton of coal by a man whose description accords with that of Nelson quoted above, and the latter is to be interviewed regarding the offence. The offender who ordered the coal to bo delivered to the Clarendon Hotel received £37 6s. 6d. in cash from Winstone’s Ltd. No warrant.

Whitianga. —29th ultimo, on warrant of commitment to Thames Prison for seven days in default of paying £3 4s. fine and costs for being found on licensed premises during prohibited hours, James McKiwon, age about forty, height 5 ft. 8 in., labourer, native of New Zealand, medium build, dark complexion and hair, brown eyes, one eyelid droops, bowed legs ; usually dressed in a navy-blue suit (no hat.)

Taumarunui. —4th ultimo, on warrant for theft of a blue fibrecane suit-case and contents (described below), the property of Romola Murray, Rangaroa, Joyce Hilary Day, age seventeen, height 5 ft. 6 in., domestic, native of New Zealand, plump build, fair complexion and hair, grey eyes; may be wearing a white dress with red and blue striped sleeves, navy-blue overcoat or red tartan waterproof overcoat ; well spoken: A navy-blue dress with mauve and green petticoat; a green taffeta evening dress trimmed with mauve and green, puffed short sleeves, with green silk petticoat ; a blue swagger overcoat trimmed with grey lamb’s wool, may have “ Smith and Caughey, Ltd., Auckland ” on it; and a pink and mauve fine plaited straw purse, containing ~a £1 note ; total value, £9 10s. Accused obtained £5 11s. 9d. cash and a pair of working boots (size 9), value £1 Bs. 3d., from Alfred Frederick Coker, manager, Hannah’s Shoe Store, High Street, by'means of a valueless cheque for £7, drawn on the Bank of New Zealand, Lower Hutt. He may be identical with a man who gave the name J. Williams when tendering a valueless cheque for £29 3s. 4d., signed “ H. He is usually dressed in a navy-blue suit with white stripes, grey hat, and black tweed overcoat which is heavily padded at shoulders, has a small slightly upturned nose with scar on bridge, and he is well spoken. A prohibition order was issued against him at Wellington on the 10th July last.

Nelson. —3oth ultimo, on warrant to apprehend for failing to comply with the terms of a maintenance order for the support of his illegitimate child of whom Melva Isobella Guilder is the mother, Mervyn Joseph Dae, referred to in Police Gazette, 1940, page 851, and Photographs, 1935, page 30.
