Whangarei. — l9th instant, on warrant of commitment to Auckland Prison for three months in default of paying £lB arrears on a maintenance order for the support of his illegitimate child, John Aitcheson, age about fifty-five, height 5 ft. 10 in., butcher and labourer, native of Scotland, medium build, pale complexion, grey hair going bald, brown eyes, natural teeth which are dirty, thin features; unkempt appearance ; a heavy cigarette smoker ; fond of drink. ccwcMed/

Auckland. —4th ultimo, for assaulting Ah Hon and robbing him of £32 10s. in money, Two Men (names unknown) — (1) Age about twenty-six, height about 5 ft. 8 in., thin build, long thin face ; wearing a black suit. (2) Age about thirty, height about 5 ft. 6 in., round face ; wearing a dark suit (no hat). About 7 p.m. on the 4th ultimo, in Nelson Street, the complainant was seized by the above-described men who held a handkerchief over his mouth and stole £32 10s. in money from his pockets. No warrant.

Auckland. —loth May last, for obtaining credit by fraud, Mrs. W. Wilson, alias Mrs. E. Carson, age about thirty-three, height about 5 ft. 6 in., slight build, sallow complexion, brown hair; wearing a brown costume and fur necklet; plausible manner; good appearance. On the 10th May last and on divers dates between then and 7th June accused obtained the goods described below from the Farmers’ Trading Co. by fraudulently representing on four occasions that her name was Mrs. W. Wilson, and her address 21 Wairakei Street, Greenlane, and on another occasion that her name was Mrs. E. Carson, 19 Atkinson Itoad, Otahuhu : A doublebed quilt of gold brocaded marocain with ruchcd centre and frilled edge, “ Fairy Brand ” sewn on back; a fourpiece E.P.N.S. tea-set, either “ Hecworth ” or “ Dixon ” brand, including hot-water jug, teapot, sugar-container, and cream-jug; a set of carvers with stag handles, branded “ Christopher Johnson ” ; six E.P.N.S. dessert-spoons, branded on back “ 5.D.W.T.5.G.1.D.” in circle ; a bread-knife, branded “M. Bernard and Coy., Durucut ” ; three gentlemen’s Roslyn worsted singlets ; three Roslyn woollen knee-drawers ; three pairs of coloured fugi silk pyjamas; two grey flannel shirts; an air-force blue flannel shirt; six pairs of gentlemen’s fancy socks ; an oak desk-chair, with brown Rexine seat, shaped plywood back, stained and polished in twotone brown oak; a pair of ladies’ brown leather gaiters with zip-fasteners; two linen tea-towels; a green organdi food-spread ; a cream-coloured linen supper-cloth with lace edge; 2} yd. of 54 in. woollen costume material, may be blue colour ; a case of cake-forks ; and a jam-spoon ; total value, £4B Bs. 2d. Portion identifiable. She may be identical with Mrs. C. Harris, referred to in Police Gazette, 1937, page 315, and with Miss J. English, referred to in Police Gazette, 1937, page 369. No warrant.

Auckland. — sth June last, for false pretences, F. Hammond, age about thirty, height 5 ft. 9 in., medium build, fresh complexion, dark-brown hair; wearing a dark suit of woven striped pattern, grey cardigan (no vest or hat); plausible manner; good appearance. Accused obtained £l2 10s. from William Stanley Morrison, licensee, Star Hotel, Albert Street, by means of a valueless cheque, No. W. 8396, for that amount, drawn on the Bank of New Zealand, Auckland, in favour of T. Hammond, signed “ M. Duncan,” and dated 4/6/40. The cheque-form was one of two purchased by a man of similar description to Hammond (who gave the name Hansen), from Mary Margaret Flett, licensee, Commercial Hotel. No warrant.

Auckland. 2oth June last, that he may be located and interviewed regarding forgery and false pretences, Carl Jack Cleaver, age twenty-six, height 5 ft. 7 in., painter, native of America, slight build, fresh complexion, long fair hair, thin features, operation-scar on throat. Accused obtained from Leslie Edmund Power and Sidney Kay, aircraftsmen, Hobsonville Air Base, £75 (37 10s. each) by falsely representing that an Austin Seven saloon motor-car, engine No. 220314, chassis No. 218655, which he sold to them was his own unencumbered property, whereas in fact he held it on a hire-purchase agreement with the Northern Automobiles, Ltd., Auckland, and still owed £3B 12s. on it. To attest the truth of his representation that he had fully paid for the car he produced to complainants four receipts issued to him by the Northern Automobiles, Ltd., for the following amounts : £SO, dated 11/2/39, No. F. 9194; £SO, dated 12/4/39, No. E. 1388; £SO, dated 13/5/39, No. G. 993 ; and £2O, dated 9/3/40, No. E. 1515, but subsequent inquiries revealed that the three last-mentioned receipts were forgeries, having been originally issued by the firm for payments of £lO, £lO, and £7 respectively. Accused is believed to have left for Australia in June last under the name J. Cleaver. No warrant.

Hamilton. 2sth ultimo, on warrant for false pretences, H. Millen, age about forty, height 5 ft. 11 in., medium build, fresh complexion, dark-brown hair; dressed in blue-grey worsted suit, fawn felt hat with wide brim, and fawn overcoat; plausible manner; good appearance. Accused obtained £4 in money from William Walter Wratten, salesman for Reid’s Furnishings, Ltd., Collingwood Street, by means of a valueless cheque for £6, drawn on the Bank of New Zealand, Te Kuiti, in favour of H. Millen by H. Millen, dated 25th July, 1940, which he uttered in payment of a deposit of £2 on an eiderdown quilt. He obtained the blank cheque-form from J. R. Henderson, boot and shoe retailer, Victoria Street, Hamilton. George (name probably fictitious), age thirty-seven, height 5 ft. 9 in., medium build, sallow complexion, lightbrown hair, long thin features ; wearing a drab-grey overcoat, grey felt dirty hat; shabby appearance. Accused obtained £6 from Frederick Hadlow Barton, garage proprietor, by means of a valueless cheque for that amount, No. A. 521529, drawn on the Bank of New Zealand, Taihape, in favour of G. George, signed “ G. George,” and dated 16th August, 1940. The blank cheque-form was obtained from James Patrick Chapman, boot-importer, Taihape, to whom the offender gave the name Nolan. Whakatane. —22nd ultimo, on warrant for being a rogue and vagabond in that he imposed on a charitable institution by false representation, Arthur Francis IVlunton, referred to ip Police Gazette, 1940, page 530, and Photographs, 1924, page 62. On the 22nd ultimo a man who gave the name A. F. Munton, called at the Social Security Office and was given a position on the farm of E. J. Bell, Edgecumbe. He then procured from the, Secretary, Whakatane Relief Committee, working clothes, value £4 2s. lid., by falsely representing that he was going to the above-mentioned position. He has not been seen since. The photograph of Arthur Francis IVlunton has been identified as that of accused.

New Plymouth. —l4th June last, for false pretences, Mrs. Mayne (name probably fictitious), age about forty, height about 5 ft. 9 in., medium build, sallow complexion, dark hair turning grey, dark: eyes; dressed in a grey knitted costume with blue fleck, greyish fawn fur coat, and blue shoes. Accused obtained , two jars of “ Jane Seymour ” cosmetic cream, value 17s. 3d., from Richard Henry Christie, chemist, Devon Street, by falsely representing that she was Mrs. Mayne of Waitara. On the same day she also obtained the property described below from other shopkeepers by means of a similar false representation : Three pairs of Prestige silk stockings, size 9£, Titian colour, value £1 125.; and a light navy-blue military-type hat with peak in front, value 17s, lid. Wanganui. —22nd December last, on warrant for committing bigamy, Alexander Frederick Gordon Lyons, age forty-one, height 5 ft. 8 in., labourer, native of New Zealand, medium build, sallow complexion, light-brown hair, grey eyes, scar on back of right ear, on right upper arm, over right eye, on right knee, and on left palm. On the 24th June, 1925, at the Methodist Church, Hawera, accused married Alice Clemance Amelia Hall, and on the 22nd December, 1939, being then married and knowing that his wife was still alive, he went through the form of marriage at St. Mary’s Church, Wanganui, with Annette Mary Johnston.
