Whangarei. —On or about the 21st October, 1939, on warrant for carnally knowing Katherine Pitman, age fourteen, of Takahiwi, Leslie Heemi Pitman, age twenty-three, height 5 ft. 7 in., labourer, Maori, medium build, dark complexion, blapk hair, brown eyes, broad nose; he is a member of the Second Echelon, New Zealand Expeditionary Force. The girl above referred to is accused’s half-sister, and she gave birth to a female child on the 21st ultimo. There is evidence that he was aware that the girl was his half-sister. In October last complainant left the horse with Greenwood who sold it on or about the 25th November without authority, and he is to be interviewed regarding the transaction. Hamilton. —4th June last, that he may be located and interviewed, Cecil Geoffrey Turnbull, alias Cyril Turnbull, age forty-three, height 5 ft. 9 in., cook, labourer, and showman’s assistant, native of New Zealand, fresh complexion, brown hair, blue eyes, bird and “ Marie ” on right forearm, ship, “ Mother,” and “ True Love ” on left forearm, left fore and middle fingers may be missing. On the 3rd June last Louis Jones, who was employed by Mr. Davey at a “ dodgem ” and “ merry-go-round ” sideshow at the Hamilton Winter Show, telegraphed to his mother at 43 Rata Street, Palmerston North, to send him £5. The same day Mrs. Jones sent a £5 note by registered letter, but her son did not receive either the letter or the money, and later it was discovered that the signature “ Louis Jones ” was forged to a receipt for the letter at the Chief Post-office, Hamilton, on the 4th June. A man known as Cyril Turnbull, who was also employed at the sideshow referred to, was dismissed by Mr. Davey on the day of the offence. It was customary for him to collect the mail for his employer and the other employees, and he is suspected of having committed the offence. New Plymouth.—lst ultimo, for false pretences, Henry Arthur Clayton (name probably fictitious), age about forty, height 5 ft. 8 in., good build, tanned complexion, dark hair ; dressed in a dark suit and felt hat. Accused, on the Ist ultimo, opened an account at the Bank of Australasia, New Plymouth, by depositing £2, and procured a cheque-book containing thirty cheque-forms, Nos. A. 755461-A. 755490. On the same day he obtained from Royden Crombie, tobacconist, Devon Street, a tin of cigarettes, value 2s. lid., and £3 6s. Id. cash by means of one of the cheques referred to, No. A. 755461, drawn for £3 95., payable to Charles Clayton or bearer, signed “ G. H.” or “ G. W. Wallace,” and dated Ist July, 1940. He also committed two similar offences on the same day. When cashing one of the cheques he stated that he was just out of hospital after having had an operation for rupture. No warrant.
