John Alexander Stone, escaping from Avondale Mental Hospital (see Police Gazette, 1940, page 185) : He was at Waihi on the 25th ultimo, and left there that afternoon, saying he was going to look for employment on a farm. Te Puke. 24th January last, on warrant for false pretences, J. G. Pearson, age about thirty, height ft. 8 in., agent, native of New Zealand, medium build,fresh complexion, brown hair, grey eyes; dressed in light-coloured trousers and sports coat. Accused, who falsely stated that he was a reporter for “ New Zealand Truth ” newspaper, obtained £7 from George Hagger, traveller, Cameron Road, by means of a valueless cheque for that amount. The photograph of John Hartland Pierson, referred to in Police Gazette, 1940, page 273, and Photographs, 1939, page 36, has been identified as that of accused. (See following paragraph.)

Matamata. —l9th September last, for a breach of hi* probation (Offenders Probation Act, 1920), Kenneth Roy Herbert, age nineteen, height 5 ft. 8 in., labourer, native of New Zealand, medium build, fresh complexion, fair hair, blue eyes. He has failed to report to a Probation Officer, and his arrest is desired, but no action is to be taken after 30th November next. Rotorua. — Bth ultimo, on warrant for attempted false pretences, John Wade, age about fifty-five, height about 5 ft. 6 in., labourer, native of New Zealand, medium build, fair complexion, brown hair and eyes, crooked nose, cast in left eye, round shoulders ; dressed in a blue suit, gabardine raincoat, and felt hat; peculiar speech. Accused attempted to obtain £4 12s. 6d. in cash from Herbert Alexander Goudie, nurseryman, by means of a valueless cheque for £8 on the Union Bank of Australia, signed “ L. W. Reals,” which he presented in payment for some trees which he stated were for Mr. Reals, farmer, Onewhero, who he falsely represented had authorized him to purchase them. He may be identical with Charles Mozart Spinley, referred to in Police Gazette, 1940, page 261, and Photographs, 1930, page 8.

Waitotara. —6th ultimo, on warrant for theft of a wedding ring (recovered); and a 14 ct. gold engagement ring, set with three small diamonds similar to illustration No. 75 in Police Gazette, 1911, page 6, Albert Rama, alias Bill Arapata, age twenty-eight, height 5 ft. 7 in., labourer, Maori, medium build, copper complexion, black hair, green eyes, broad nose, shifty eyes, scar on right shoulder, over right ear, and on left shin. Taihape. —4th December last, that a summons may be served on her for using indecent language in a railway carriage on the Wellington-Auckland express train, June Crawford, age twenty-one, waitress, medium build, red hair. She and another woman, both under the influence of liquor, were travelling on the train accompanied by two soldiers, and she used the language in the railway carriage between Marton and Taihape.

Wanganui. 26th ultimo, for false pretences, A. Richards (name probably fictitious), age about thirty-seven, height 5 ft. 6 in., medium build, dark complexion; dressed in a brown suit and hat; nasal speech. Accused obtained £1 18s. in money from Louis Koorey, men’s outfitter, Victoria Avenue, by means of a valueless cheque for £6 drawn on the National Bank of New Zealand, Wanganui, in favour of “ Cash,” and signed “A. Richards.” The cheque-form had been stolen from the second-hand shop of Thomas Windle. He may be identical with Percival Richard Williams, referred to in Police Gazette, 1940, page 182, and Photographs, 1933, page 84, and with A. Richards, referred to in Police Gazette, 1939, page 426.
