Tuakau. —sth instant, on warrant for forgery, Jack Wade, age about fifty-five, height about 5 ft. 6 in., labourer, native of New Zealand, medium build, fair complexion, brown hair and eyes, crooked nose, cast in left eye, round shoulders, heart on left forearm; usually dressed in a blue suit, felt hat, and light gaberdine overcoat; peculiar speech; fond of drink. Accused obtained £9 in money and goods, value 65., from Beatrice May Rose, fruiterer, Liverpool Street, by means of a cheque for £lO, No. 3 A. 175010, drawn on the Union Bank of Australia, Pukekohe, to which the signature of L. W. Reals, Onewhero, had been forged. Accused had been working for Mr. Reals, Onewhero, for about five months. He obtained the cheque-form and three others (Nos. 3 A. 175008, 3 A. 177999, 3 A. 178000) from Mrs. N. McConnell, Pukekohe. Morrinsville. —7th instant, on warrant to apprehend for failing to maintain his illegitimate child, of whom Ellen Henrietta Ryan, domestic, Waitoa, is the mother, William John Cecil Rust, alias William Simms, age thirty-three, height 5 ft. 8 in., labourer, native of England, medium build, fresh complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, scar over left eye. Hamilton. 9th instant, for attempted rape on Teresa Hall, married, of Mill Road, Paeroa, Man (name unknown). About 4.45 a.m. on the 9th instant, while complainant was alone in her dwelling (her husband having gone to the milkingshed), accused entered her bedroom, assaulted her, and attempted to rape her. Complainant is able to supply only the following description of her assailant: Soft skin on face and no beard, narrow nose, small mouth, thin lips, hair thick and long and probably wavy or curly, spoke good English, and was probably not a Maori. The following described felt hat was found in the bedroom having apparently been left by the accused: Fawn, coloured fur with deep brown band, not lined, size 7, fairly wide brim ; inside the leather band was a 10s. “place” Blomfield and Co. totalizator ticket, dated 26-2-40. Accused may have cut his hand when he hit complainant in the face and broke one of her teeth. About 3 a.m. on the 3rd ultimo a similar offence was committed on Mrs. Violet Millett, of Te Aroha Road, Paeroa, and it is considered that the same offender is responsible. No warrant.

Hamilton. On or about the 15th May, 1939, on warrant for theft of £9l 15s. 4d., the property of Lucy Adeline Reid, Peria Street, Matamata, Luther Hopkins, age fifty-six, height 5 ft. 11A in., solicitor, native of New Zealand, strong build, fair complexion and hair, blue eyes, long features, broad face ; usually well dressed, and wears glasses ; rolling gait. He mbs a solicitor at To Aroha and received £9l 15s. 4d. which he was to pay to the complainant, but he failed to do so. He is thought to have gone to Australia. Rotorua. —7th instant, on warrant for false pretences, Claud Edgar Egan, age twenty-five, height 5 ft. 5 in., labourer, native of New Zealand, medium build, fresh complexion, fair hair, hazel eyes; wearing blue suit (no hat). Accused obtained £6 from James Barr Hastings Morland, storekeeper, by means of a valueless cheque for that amount drawn on the Bank of New Zealand, Matamata, No. B. 35292, signed C. E. Egan, and dated 5/3/40. He obtained the chequeform from E. T. Johnson, land agent.
