Curts, age about thirty-three, height 5 ft. 6 in., labourer, native of New Zealand, strong build, fresh complexion, fair hair, may have gold filling in left upper teeth ; dressed in light-fawn suit, white shirt with open neck (no hat). Accused obtained £8 12s. in money from Ernest McDuff, licensee of the Pacific Hotel, by means of a valueless cheque for that amount, drawn on the Bank of New Zealand, Hastings, signed W. J. White, payable to E. Curts, and dated 29th November, 1939. On the 9th ultimo a man who gave the name F. Berry, and who is believed to be identical with Curts, obtained £8 ss. in money from Arthur Henry Bradshaw, draper, Hastings, by means of a similar valueless cheque. The hand-writing on both cheques is identical.

Harrison (name probably fictitious), age about thirty-seven, height about 5 ft. 11 in., labourer, native of New Zealand, medium build, fresh complexion, brown hair, blue eyes; wearing light grey woollen overcoat and grey felt hat. Accused obtained a cheque for £7 17s. 6d. from Ellen Jane Williams, Pukehou, by falsely representing that he was connected with the Cawthron Institute, Nelson, and that a tablet of carbolic disinfectant which he sold to complainant was a borer exterminator. He may be identical with Harold Richardson Kerr, referred to in Police Gazette, 1940, page 41, and Photographs, nage 34.

Palmerston North.— Eugene Charles Dominic McCarthy, indecent assault, &c. (see Police Gazette, 1940, pages 41 and 157) : A man suspected of being identical with McCarthy, who gave the name Nev/son, was seen at Waikanae, near Wellington, on the 17th ultimo. He was wearing blue denim overalls with straps over shoulders, grey flannel shirt, new grey felt hat, and heavy boots with nails in soles, and he was in possession of a new portmanteau which appeared to be full of new clothing. Some new grey blankets were strapped to the portmanteau. He offered for sale a pair of tan lace-up boots and a gentlemen’s overcoat, and he requested passing motorists to give him a lift to Auckland. Special efforts are to be made to arrest McCarthy, as several charges of indecent assault are pending against him.

He may be in possession of a maroon-coloured 1933-34 model Austin 10 saloon motor-car with black wire wheels, chassis No. 95876, engine No. 5861, registration No. 208,533 or D. 1,987. This car was stolen from Napier Street, Seatoun Heights, during the night of the sth instant. He may be wearing a dark-brown doublebreasted herringbone suit and white sandshoes. This clothing was stolen from a hut in Happy Valley Road between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. on thguday of the prisoner’s escape.
