Hastings. — July last, on warrant for false pretences, C. Nicholl, age about forty-two, height 5 ft. 8 in., salesman, native of New Zealand, medium build, fair complexion, brown hair and eyes, long nose. Accused obtained £1 deposit on an aluminium steam cooker from Mrs. Edith Mary Burns, Richmond Road, by falsely stating that he represented the Aluminium Utensils Co., Auckland. He may be identical with Cyril Henry Charles Nicholl, referred to in Police Gazette, 1939, page 826. There are other similar charges pending. Browning (name probably fictitious), age about forty-five, height 5 ft. 10 in., good build, fresh complexion, brown hair, blue eyes; dressed in a navy-blue suit with fine stripes, and grey felt hat; smart appearance. Accused obtained £1 7s. 6d. in money from Rhoda Hester Wing, florist, Broadway, by means of a valueless cheque for £3 10s. on the Union Bank of Australia, New Plymouth, No. 3A085072, payable to T. Browning, signed “ W. J. Jefferies, secretary ” and “ H. W. Smithers, treasurer,” and stamped “ Fitzroy Lodge, No. 36, R.A.0.8.” He tendered the cheque in payment for a wreath which he ordered but did not collect. He may be identical with Thomas Alfred Gross, referred to in Police Gazette, 1939, page 826, and with James Ogden Alexander, referred to in Police Gazette, 1939, page 826, and Photographs, 1932, page 55. On the 21st March last he purchased a 1930 model Morris Minor light delivery van, registration No. L. 17,642 for year 1938-39, engine No. U. 5158, chassis No. M. 5049, for £3O, paying a deposit of £lO.
