MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION.

Memorandum.] Motor Accident Report Forms. The following copy of a memorandum received from the Commissioner of Transport is published for the information and attention of members of the Force when preparing motor accident report forms. D. J. Cummings, Commissioner of Police. Wellington, 7th July, 1939. (P. 36/1431.) Motor Accident Reports. Would you kindly instruct all officers reporting accidents on the standard report form to indicate the direction of travel of the various units involved. This is particularly important in the case of accidents which happen at intersections, and although the required information is often supplied now, this is frequently not the case. Where several accidents occur at a particular intersection it is often desirable to plot a collision diagram showing which way the colliding parties were travelling. This is most useful in focusing attention upon some physical feature which may be contributing to the accidents or indicating the need for an appropriate traffic regulatory device, road marking, &c. However, where there is no information as to the direction the traffic was moving it is not possible to use the accident record of the intersection in this way. This information should be provided under section 6 “ Further Brief Description of Accident” the foot of the front of the report form. A typical satisfactory entry here would be “ Vehicle No. 1 was travelling north-west along Ferguson Street, and vehicle No. 2 was travelling south-west along Fitzherbert Avenue.” Often now in such a case the report states that vehicle No. 1 failed to give way to No. 2 approaching on the right of No. 1. This description is inadequate for the purpose mentioned. If so desired, a simple sketch could be substituted instead of the written description of the vehicle movements. Care would have to be taken, of course, that the names and directions of the streets were indicated on the sketch. G. L. Laurenson, Commissioner of Transport.
