Assault Causing Grievous Bodily Harm. Palmerston North. -About 7.5 p.m. on the 26th ultimo, Constance Mona Hallam, single, age twenty-one, a housemaid at Massey College, left the institution to cycle to the city to meet her sister. About twenty-five minutes later she was found unconscious, lying on the roadside about one mile and a half from Massey College at a spot about seventy yards on the Linton side of Fitzherbert Bridge. An examination of her at the public hospital revealed that she had received a very severe blow on the back of her head which fractured the skull. On the opposite side of the road and about 47 ft. from where Miss Hallam was lying her bicycle was found. It showed no signs of damage to indicate that it had been struck by a vehicle. Near to the bicycle was found a somewhat rusted bicycle clip with blood on it, and about 3 ft. from the bicycle, concealed under dead thistles, was found a bolt 26! in. long and f in', thick from which the nut had recently been removed. The bolt appeared not to have been previously exposed to the weather, and is considered to have been the weapon used to assault the woman. The holt is one of those used in drums on which heavy electric cable is imported. The missing nut would be Hi in. by 1-J. in. by in. thick, would probably have some green paint on it, and with it should also be two washers, size 3 in. by 3 in, by in. thick. Her handbag containing money was found intact on the road, and medical reports indicate that no sexual attack had been made on her. Any information regarding the offence is to be communicated to the Inspector of Police, Palmerston North 'WA Police Identification-card Lost. Christchurch. Between the 3rd and 6th ultimo, Sergeant E. A. Gatehouse, No. 2460, lost a pocket wallet containing his identification-card, £l4 in money, and a motor-driver’s license.
