Accused obtained ss. 6d. from Samuel Brown, bootmaker, by falsely representing that he was agent for the Auckland Service Printery, Wakefield Street, and that orders for special account books for the sale of which he was canvassing would be fulfilled. Thomas, age about forty-one, height 5 ft. 8 in., canvasser, medium build, dark complexion and hair, brown eyes, cast in one eye, discoloured teeth; well dressed. Accused obtained ss. 6d. from Alfred Ernest Mayall, bootmaker, Eruera Street, by falsely representing that he was an agent for the Auckland Service Printery, 15 Wakefield Street, Auckland, and had authority to solicit orders and accept money for an accounts ledger on behalf of the firm stated. He hired the motor-car from complainant at 4 p.m. on the 15th ultimo, and was to return it at 6 p.m. the same day, but he failed to do so, and it was found abandoned at Wairoa on the 28th ultimo. Christchurch. —lsth August last : A warrant has been issued for the arrest of each of the following on a charge of false pretences —(1) Morris, age thirty- height 5 ft. 6j in., showman, native of New Zealand, brown hair, hazel eyes; dressed in a brown suit. The photograph of John Shaw, alias Munro, referred to in Police Gazette, 1938, page 282, and Photographs, page 49, has been identified as that of accused. (2) Douglas (name probably fictitious), age about forty-five, height about 5 ft. 10 in., stout build, dark complexion and hair; dressed in a navy-blue suit and felt hat. They obtained £ll from Ivy Olive McCarthy, hairdresser, 145 High Street, by falsely representing that they were friends of her brothers, Rangi and Mick Thompson, who are jockeys, and that the accused Douglas owned the racehorse “ Pango ” which had not won at Riccarton as they had expected, in consequence of which, they said, they had lost all their money. Later advice has been received that John Shaw, alias Munro, has been arrested.
