Whangarei. —Bth April last, on warrant for false pretences, J. Williamson, alias Fred Johnston (names probably fictitious), age about thirty, height about 5 ft. 7 in., native of New Zealand, thin build, pale complexion, fair hair, light ginger moustache; dressed in light-grey trousers, navyblue coat, fawn felt hat, and black shoes ; good appearance; quiet manner; well spoken. Accused obtained £8 10s. from Horace Jack Banton, grocer, Bank Street, by falsely representing that he had a cheque for £49 10s. in his clothes which, he said, were in the home of Mary Agnes Moorcraft (who lived opposite to complainant), and that she had sent him to Mr. Banton.

Auckland. 7th instant: Inquiries are to be made for Edward Donovan, referred to in Police Gazette, 1938, page 85, and Photographs, 1932, page 17 ; and Kenneth Bates, age twenty-six, height 6 ft. 14 in., seaman, native of Australia, medium build, fair complexion, brown hair and eyes, Australian coat-of-arms on right arm; dressed in a grey suit and black shoes (no hat). They possessed a 1929 model Oakland tourer motor-car, grey body with blue bonnet, black mudguards and hood, registration No. 34,903, engine No. R.L. 78747, chassis No. 8294454, value, £55. It is held under a hire-purchase agreement, and on the 4th instant the speedometer read 60167. They may abandon this car for a better one. They may be accompanied by Violet Price (known as Mrs. Donovan), age about thirty-five, height 5 ft. 4 in., good build, dark-brown buster-cut hair; dressed in a blue costume, fawn fur coat, and small tight-fitting black hat. They are suspected of having, in company with Donald James Jones, referred to in Police Gazette, 1938, page 53 (who has been arrested), broken into the Glen Eden Post-office on the night of the 30th ultimo and removed the safe about three miles where they opened it by means of explosives, and on the 3rd April last broken into the United Stores, Taupiri, and stolen tobacco; cigarettes ; a brown and fawn Kaiapoi rug; a West alarm clock; and three boxes C.A.C. 12-gauge shot-gun cartridges; and 10s. in pennies; and on the night of the sth instant broken into the Penrose Post-office and removed the safe which they opened with explosives. Ancill, remitted 10s. by money-order telegram from Avondale to Frank Clarke, Post-office, Newton, and on the . same evening a man who gave his name as Frank Clarke purchased the goods described below from George Thomas Pearce, mercer, 278 Karangahape Road, in payment for Ij which he uttered the money-order telegram which had been Lj altered from 10s. to £lO 10s., receiving goods, value £3 4s. 4d., * j and £7 ss. Bd. cash: Three semi-stiff collars of Lantern A brand; two wide-end Parisian ties; two pairs of fancy cashmere socks; three Pyramid handkerchiefs; a pair of light braces; two pink cotton singlets; two pairs of cotton V underpants; and two striped shirts. Accused may be identical with Raymond Morris, alias Bert Morris, referred 5 to in Police Gazette, 1937, page 263 ; Frank Taylor, alias kj C. March last, on warrant of commitment to Auckland Prison for two months in default of paying £ls arrears on a maintenance order for the support of his child, Alfred Charles Taine, age forty-four, height 5 ft. 9 in., insurance agent, native of New Zealand, slight build, dark complexion, black hair, dark-brown eyes. He may be released on payment of £l4 10s. 6d. (See Police Gazette, 1937, page 171, and Photographs, page 22.)

Hamilton. Bth April last, on warrant for obtaining credit by fraud, William Brewer, alias Wi Thompson, referred to in Police Gazette, 1938, page 195, and Photographs, 1928, page 38. Accused engaged Arthur Evans Martin, taxidriver, 19 Rostrevor Street, to drive him and three Maori girls to Te Whaiti where, he said, the father of the girls was seriously injured. He falsely represented that he was well known to the taxi-driver’s employers, The Checker Taxi Co. At Rotorua he left the taxi saying he was ill and wanted to see a doctor. This was merely an artifice to elude the driver, and he did not return to the taxi. Complainant continued on with the girls to Te Whaiti where their father was well and had not met with an accident. The distance covered was about four hundred miles, and the debt incurred for taxi fare was £l4 7s. . ARRESTED. S/9/5R

Rotorua. — l6th ultimo, on warrant for theft of a radio amplifier* (recovered), value £5, the property of Herbert James Dooley, Hinemoa Street, Frank ROSS, age about thirty, height 5 ft. 9 in., labourer and seaman, native of England, good build, fresh complexion, light-brown hair, full face; dressed in a light-brown suit with white stripes, or grey trousers, blue shirt, and black cardigan (no hat). The amplifier was stolen from Commonwealth Boardinghouse in Hinemoa Street, and accused gave it to Margery Brown from whom it has been recovered. Her correct name is Turley, and her husband is a naval rating on H.M.S. “ Wellington.” Accused may assume the names Frank Lawrence Ross or Frank Harop, and while in Rotorua he associated with Norman Clifford McGill, referred to in Photographs, 1937, page ™ | £ Mjl&ltf36.

Accused obtained £4 16s. in money from Mona Avis Amalric, domestic, Central Hotel, by means of a valueless cheque for £6 on the Bank of New South Wales, Karangahape Road, Auckland, signed R. N. Mahan, which he tendered in payment for his board from the 24th to the 27th April last. The cheque was from the cheque-book of Ronald Noel Mahon, referred to in Police Gazette, 1938, page 389, and the latter may be identicalwitji accused. On the afternoon on which the offence was committed the following described men called at two houses in the locality of complainant’s dwelling and inquired for people named Mockford, and it is considered they may have been associated with the offence — Age about twenty-three, height about 5 ft. 7 in., medium build, fresh complexion, wavy dark hair, round face ; well dressed in a blue suit and grey semi-fitting overcoat (no hat). (2) Age about twenty-three, height about 5 ft. 7 in., thin features fresh complexion, long face, protruding eyes; well dressed, in a black suit with very wide bottomed trousers, and dark soft felt hat. Dunedin. —7th instant, that they may be located and interviewed regarding housebreaking, Ashley Maurice Deuchrass and Irvine Davis McEwen, referred to in preceding paragraph. On the 7th instant three men, behaving suspiciously, were seen near the dwelling of Daniel Patrick Murphy, and a little later the house was found to have been broken into and a bottle of whisky, two metal watches, a ladies’ ring, a cigarette-lighter, and a cigarette-case stolen. Thomas Anzac Reid McGiliivray, referred to in Police Gazette 1938, page 322, has been arrested for the offence, and the other two men associated with him are believed to be Deuchrass and McEwen.
