Auckland. —24th January last, that he may be located and interviewed regarding theft of a ring (recovered), value, £l6, the property of Christine Wynne, Radnor Plats, Waterloo Quadrant, Maitland, age about thirty-five, height about 5 ft. 9 in., mining engineer, native of Australia, thin build, coarse complexion, dirty teeth, broken nose, scars on face ; dressed in grey trousers and tweed Norfolk jacket. Accused told complainant that he had a friend who sells jewellery at a good price, and she gave him the ring to ascertain what she could get for it, but not to dispose of it in any way. She has not seen him since, and it has been discovered that on the 26th January last the ring was pledged at a pawnshop for 6s. by a man who gave the name Edward Sampson. Complainant has identified the photograph of Ernest William Sampson, referred to in Police Gazette, 1938, page 51, and Photographs, 1924, page 26, as being that of the accused, Maitland. He was dressed in a blue serge suit, tan shoes, and’ grey felt hat. Accused stayed on the night of the 4th ultimo with James Richardson Stewart, farmer, Apiti, from whom he obtained a blank cheque which he filled in for £5, and altered it from the Bank of New Zealand, Kimbolton, to the Bank of New Zealand, Nelson. Wellington. —3rd ultimo, on warrant of commitment to Point Halswell Prison for seven days in default of paying £2 ss. fine and costs for driving a motor-jar without having a license, Lorna Beil. rti /ti /if / Reefton. lnquiries are to be made for the driver of a motor-car which travelled along Maruia Road about 4 p.m. on the 19th February last. This car, which is thought to be a 1928 model blue Chevrolet, at a point about a mile east of Spring’s Junction finger-post, passed a Chevrolet motor-car driven by James William Glendenning, colliery manager, Dobson, and in passing struck and damaged Mr. Glendenning’s car. The driver did not stop, and complainant was unable to take the number of his motor-car.
