Auckland. —17th ultimo, on warrant for failing to maintain his two children, William Milner, age forty-eight, height 5 ft. 8 in., plasterer, native of New Zealand, medium build, dark complexion, dark-brown hair, hazel eyes, flat nose; dressed in a light-grey suit, brown hat, and shoes.

Auckland. October last, on warrant of commitment to Auckland Prison for four days in default of paying £2 ss. fine and costs for being found in a Gaming House, Eruera Hohepa (name probably fictitious), referred to in Police Gazette, 1937, page 774.

Auckland. —lßth ultimo, for assaulting Colin Richard Honey so as to cause him actual bodily harm, two IVten (names unknown) — Age about twenty-one, height about 5 ft. 6 in., slight build, dark complexion, round face, lightbrown hair, prominent teeth; dressed in a dark-brown suit with darker stripes, and dark-blue jersey with polo collar (no hat). (2) Age about eighteen, height about 5 ft. 7 in., slight build, dark complexion and hair, long face ; dressed in a dark-brown suit and dark-blue jersey with polo collar (no hat). At the conclusion of a picture performance in the Roxy Theatre, Colin Richard Honey was pushed by one of the accused, and there took place an, altercation which continued outside the theatre in Queen Street, where the firstdescribed accused drew a white-handled razor from his pocket and slashed complainant on the face, inflicting a wound about 4 in. long. He also attempted to slash complainant’s friend. No warrant.

Morrinsville. 9th November last, on warrant for forgery, David Henry Pattison, age thirty, height 5 ft. 8 in., labourer, native of New Zealand, medium build, fresh complexion, bald, grey eyes, scar on back of right hand and on back of right forearm ; dressed in a navy-bine suit and darkbrown felt hat. On the 9th November last a cheque which had been stolen from the cheque-book of Harold Chapman, farmer, Walton, and to which his signature had been forged was uttered to Neil Thwaites at Hamilton. The cheque had been drawn for £l6 10s., and the writing has been identified as that of David Henry Patiison, referred to in Police Gazette, 1934, page 298, and Photographs, 1925, page 37, who left complainant’s house on the Bth November last and went to Hamilton next day. He is to be released on payment of £5. RATS ARREARS. 2sfSb/3S Palmerston North. —On or about the sth April last, on warrant for theft of £2l, the property of Frieda Anna Maxwell, domestic, Carnarvon, Rongotea, Douglas Charles RUSS, age about forty, height about 5 ft. 10 in., share salesman, native of New Zealand, good build, fresh complexion, brown hair and eyes, left eye artificial; may be wearing a dark-grey suit; will probably be driving a Ford V 8 blue sedan motorcar, registration No. 37,027, and he may endeavour to leave this Dominion. When returning from Australia recently he travelled under the names Percy Russ and H. C. Rose. In company with Talbot Johnstone accused called at complainant’s home and informed her that they were representatives of the Tung Oil Co. They endeavoured to sell her some shares in that company, and they discovered that she possessed shares and bonds in the New Zealand Perpetual Forests, Ltd., which she agreed to their selling, the proceeds to be paid into the New Zealand Tung Oil, Ltd., as a deposit on shares. On the sth April last they sold the bonds and shares referred to through Sydney Tricklebank, sharebroker, Auckland, and they have not paid the proceeds into the Tung Oil Co., nor have they accounted to complainant for the money which they received. There are other charges pending, and a warrant for his arrest for a similar offence has been issued at Auckland, $J {Jf f/ // f t\ / (U^L/whhi Palmerston North. 2oth ultimo, for escaping front legal custody, Frederick Hendry, age sixty-one, height 6 ft.,baker and cook, native of New Zealand, medium build, pale complexion, grey hair and eyes, grey heavy moustache, deaf, and he usually carries a writing-pad which he uses to help to carry on a coversation; dressed in ' a light-grey suit and brown shoes which are well worn at heels. He was arrested at Hastings on the charge of indecent assault, referred to in Police Gazette, 1937, page 785, and while being escorted to Auckland he escaped* at Palmerston North. Paekakariki. 26th November last, that he may he located and interviewed regarding his having obtained £2 10s. from Riwai Hollis Howell, farmer, Paraparaumu, Harold Keith Amner, referred to in Police Gazette, 1937, page 269. On the 25th November last Amner was employed by complainant, and next day he was granted leave to go to Levin for his effects. He also asked for and was given £2 10s. advance on his wages, which he said he required to pay to a hotelkeeper at Levin for his board and lodgings. It has been ascertained that he stayed at the Levin hotel from the 18th to 22nd November last, and has not since called to pay for his board or collect his suit-case and clothing.

Wellington. — l7th November last, on warrant of commitment to Wellington Prison for one month in default of paying £4 10s. balance of fine and restitution for theft, Francis James Godwin, referred to in Police Gazette, 1937, page 713, and Photographs, 1938, page 3. /# ’ 7 3^.

Nelson. 3oth ultimo, on warrant for false pretences, R. Allan, age about forty-four, slight build, dark hair and complexion, sharp features; dressed in a brownish suit with stripes and light-grey felt hat. He is charged as follows : “On the 30th December, 1937, at Nelson, with intent to defraud did obtain from John William Bradbury £6 in money and a wreath, value £2, by falsely representing that a cheque, No. 709627, for £9 55., drawn on the Bank of New Zealand, Nelson, in favour of R. Allan and signed W. Hamilton, was a good and valid order for that amount.” A man who gave his name as H. Williams obtained the cheque-form from Ernest Vesey, Tahuna, and later the same day he obtained from Bradbury the money referred to above, and requested that the wreath be sent to Mrs. R. Candy, 483 Cashel Street, Christchurch. It was arranged that he call for the balance of the money (£1 55.) the following morning, but he failed to do so. The photograph of Herbert Leah Paterson, referred to in Police Gazette, 1937, page 848, and Photographs, 1932, page 86, has been identified by Vesey as the man who-qbtained the cheque-form from him. arrested, Greymouth. —23rd October last, on warrant for false pretences, John Brewer, age about forty-five, height about 5 ft. 9 in., farm manager, native of England, stout build, ruddy complexion, fair hair, brown small eyes, full face; usually well dressed in a dark-grey suit; fond of drink. At the Greymouth Trotting Club’s meeting at Victoria Park on the 23rd October last accused obtained £SO from Harry Digby James, totalizator proprietor, by means of a valueless cheque for that amount, drawn on the Bank of New Zealand, Temuka. Later the same day when complainant was at the Bank of New Zealand in Greymouth, accused induced him to return the cheque, Brewer asserting that he had picked up the wrong cheque-book when hurriedly leaving Temuka for Greymouth, and promising to forward forthwith from Temuka the correct cheque or the money. He has disappeared, and inquiries have revealed that he had no account at the bank, and that the cheque was from a cheque-book issued to Mrs. Earl of Temuka for whom Brewer had been farm manager. ARRESTED. 3x Cromwell. l6th ultimo/on warrant for failing to maintain his wife, Jessie May Longshaw, and two children, Public Works Camp, Haast Pass, George Longshaw, age forty-three, height 5 ft. 9£ in., labourer and caterer, native of New Zealand, medium build, fair complexion, curly fair hair turning grey, hazel eyes, long scar on left side of throat and on right calf, bowed legs; dressed in a blue suit and leather overcoat ; slouching gait; fond of drink.
